Τι είναι;

Τα συγκριτικά επίθετα (comparative adjectives) χρησιμοποιούνται για να συγκρίνουν δύο πρόσωπα, πράγματα, τόπους ή καταστάσεις.

Δείχνουν ότι ένα πρόσωπο ή πράγμα έχει περισσότερο ή λιγότερο από ένα χαρακτηριστικό από ένα άλλο.

Συνήθεις συγκριτικοί τύποι περιλαμβάνουν:

Η λέξη than χρησιμοποιείται συχνά μετά από ένα συγκριτικό επίθετο.

Tom is taller than Ben.

Πότε να χρησιμοποιείται

Χρησιμοποιήστε συγκριτικά επίθετα όταν συγκρίνετε δύο πρόσωπα ή πράγματα.

• This car is faster than that car.
• My room is smaller than yours.

Χρησιμοποιήστε τα όταν συγκρίνετε δύο τόπους.

• Calgary is colder than Vancouver.

Χρησιμοποιήστε τα όταν συγκρίνετε δύο καταστάσεις.

• Today is busier than yesterday.

Χρησιμοποιήστε more + adjective με πολλά μεγαλύτερα επίθετα.

• This book is more interesting than that one.

Χρησιμοποιήστε less + adjective για να δείξετε χαμηλότερο βαθμό ενός χαρακτηριστικού.

• This restaurant is less expensive than the other one.

Δομή

Για πολλά σύντομα επίθετα, προσθέστε -er.

Subject + be + adjective-er + than + noun/pronoun

• tall → taller
• fast → faster
• old → older

Παράδειγμα:

Anna is taller than Maria.

Αν ένα επίθετο τελειώνει σε -e, προσθέστε μόνο -r.

• nice → nicer
• large → larger

Αν ένα σύντομο επίθετο τελειώνει σε ένα φωνήεν + ένα σύμφωνο, το τελικό σύμφωνο συχνά διπλασιάζεται.

• big → bigger
• hot → hotter

Αν ένα επίθετο τελειώνει σε σύμφωνο + -y, αλλάξτε το y σε i και προσθέστε -er.

• happy → happier
• easy → easier

Για πολλά μεγαλύτερα επίθετα, χρησιμοποιήστε more.

Subject + be + more + adjective + than + noun/pronoun

• more beautiful
• more comfortable
• more important

Παράδειγμα:

This chair is more comfortable than that one.

Για να δείξετε χαμηλότερο βαθμό, χρησιμοποιήστε less.

Subject + be + less + adjective + than + noun/pronoun

Παράδειγμα:

This task is less difficult than the last one.

Μερικά κοινά επίθετα έχουν ανώμαλους συγκριτικούς τύπους.

2. This bag is cheaper than that one.
3. Today is hotter than yesterday.
4. Her new apartment is bigger than her old one.
5. This exercise is easier than the previous one.
6. The blue jacket is more expensive than the black one.
7. This movie is more interesting than the first one.
8. My English is better than last year.
9. The traffic is worse this morning.
10. This route is less dangerous than the other route.

Εξαιρέσεις

Μερικά επίθετα έχουν ανώμαλους συγκριτικούς τύπους και δεν ακολουθούν τον κανονικό τύπο με -er ή more.

• good → better
• bad → worse
• far → farther / further

Μη χρησιμοποιείτε κανονικά και το more και το -er μαζί.

Χρησιμοποιήστε:

taller

όχι:

more taller

Μερικά δισύλλαβα επίθετα μπορούν να χρησιμοποιήσουν είτε τη μία είτε την άλλη μορφή ανάλογα με το επίθετο και τη χρήση.

Για παράδειγμα:

• cleverer / more clever
• quieter / more quiet

Συνήθη λάθη

1. Incorrect: She is more taller than me. Correct: She is taller than me. Explanation: Μη χρησιμοποιείτε και το more και το -er με το ίδιο επίθετο.

2. Incorrect: This book is interestinger than that one. Correct: This book is more interesting than that one. Explanation: Τα μεγαλύτερα επίθετα συνήθως χρησιμοποιούν more αντί για -er.

3. Incorrect: My car is fast than yours. Correct: My car is faster than yours. Explanation: Χρησιμοποιήστε τον συγκριτικό τύπο όταν συγκρίνετε δύο πράγματα.

4. Incorrect: He is more good at tennis than me. Correct: He is better at tennis than me. Explanation: Ο συγκριτικός τύπος του good είναι better.

5. Incorrect: Today is badder than yesterday. Correct: Today is worse than yesterday. Explanation: Ο συγκριτικός τύπος του bad είναι worse.

6. Incorrect: This box is biger than that one. Correct: This box is bigger than that one. Explanation: Διπλασιάστε το τελικό σύμφωνο στο big πριν προσθέσετε -er.

7. Incorrect: This test is easyer than the last one. Correct: This test is easier than the last one. Explanation: Με επίθετα που τελειώνουν σε σύμφωνο + y, αλλάξτε το y σε i πριν προσθέσετε -er.
