Τι είναι;

Το there is και το there are χρησιμοποιούνται για να δηλώσουν ότι κάτι υπάρχει ή είναι παρόν.

Χρησιμοποιούμε το there is με:

• ένα άτομο ή πράγμα
• μη μετρήσιμα ουσιαστικά

Χρησιμοποιούμε το there are με:

• δύο ή περισσότερα άτομα ή πράγματα

Παραδείγματα:

• There is a book on the table.
• There is some milk in the fridge.
• There are three chairs in the room.

Ο σύντομος τύπος του there is είναι there’s.

• There’s a café near my house.

Πότε να τα χρησιμοποιούμε

Χρησιμοποιούμε το there is και το there are για να:

• εισάγουμε νέες πληροφορίες
• περιγράψουμε μέρη
• πούμε τι είναι διαθέσιμο
• πούμε πόσα άτομα ή πράγματα είναι παρόντα
• μιλήσουμε για γεγονότα ή προβλήματα

• There is a bank next to the station.
• There are two bathrooms in the apartment.
• There is some food in the kitchen.

Καταφατικές προτάσεις

Χρησιμοποιούμε:

there is + ενικός ουσιαστικό

• There is a shop nearby.
• There is one window in the room.

Χρησιμοποιούμε:

there is + μη μετρήσιμο ουσιαστικό

• There is some water in the bottle.
• There is a lot of traffic today.

Χρησιμοποιούμε:

there are + πληθυντικός ουσιαστικό

• There are two shops nearby.
• There are several windows in the room.

Αρνητικές προτάσεις

Χρησιμοποιούμε:

there is not + ενικό ή μη μετρήσιμο ουσιαστικό

• There is not a pharmacy nearby.
• There is not much time.

Ο σύντομος τύπος είναι there isn’t.

Χρησιμοποιούμε:

there are not + πληθυντικός ουσιαστικό

• There are not enough chairs.
• There are not any shops nearby.

Ο σύντομος τύπος είναι there aren’t.

Ερωτήσεις

Χρησιμοποιούμε:

Is there + ενικό ή μη μετρήσιμο ουσιαστικό;

• Is there a bathroom here?
• Is there any coffee left?

Χρησιμοποιούμε:

Are there + πληθυντικός ουσιαστικό;

• Are there any questions?
• Are there two bedrooms?

Σύντομες απαντήσεις

• Is there a bank nearby? — Yes, there is.
• Is there any milk? — No, there isn’t.
• Are there any tickets left? — Yes, there are.
• Are there many people? — No, there aren’t.

Χρήση των some και any

Χρησιμοποιούμε το some κυρίως σε καταφατικές προτάσεις.

• There is some bread.
• There are some apples.

Χρησιμοποιούμε το any κυρίως σε αρνητικές προτάσεις και ερωτήσεις.

• There isn’t any bread.
• Are there any apples?

Εξαιρέσεις

Στον ανεπίσημο λόγο, το there’s χρησιμοποιείται μερικές φορές πριν από πληθυντικό ουσιαστικό.

• There’s two people outside.

Αυτό είναι συνηθισμένο στη συνομιλία, αλλά το there are είναι ο τυπικός τύπος.

• There are two people outside.

Η φράση there is δεν σημαίνει το ίδιο με το it is.

• There is a café near the station. — Ένα καφέ υπάρχει εκεί.
• It is near the station. — Ένα γνωστό άτομο ή πράγμα είναι κοντά στον σταθμό.

Χρησιμοποιούμε το there was και το there were για το παρελθόν.

• There was a problem yesterday.
• There were many people at the event.

Συχνά λάθη

1. Λάθος: There are a book on the table. Σωστό: There is a book on the table. Εξήγηση: Χρησιμοποιούμε το there is με ενικό ουσιαστικό.

2. Λάθος: There is two chairs in the room. Σωστό: There are two chairs in the room. Εξήγηση: Χρησιμοποιούμε το there are με πληθυντικά ουσιαστικά.

3. Λάθος: There are some milk in the fridge. Σωστό: There is some milk in the fridge. Εξήγηση: Χρησιμοποιούμε το there is με μη μετρήσιμα ουσιαστικά.

4. Λάθος: Is there any shops nearby? Σωστό: Are there any shops nearby? Εξήγηση: Χρησιμοποιούμε το are there με πληθυντικά ουσιαστικά.

5. Λάθος: There isn’t no food. Σωστό: There isn’t any food. Εξήγηση: Αποφύγετε τον διπλό αρνητικό. Χρησιμοποιήστε το any μετά το isn’t.

6. Λάθος: Are there a bathroom here? Σωστό: Is there a bathroom here? Εξήγηση: Χρησιμοποιούμε το is there με ενικό ουσιαστικό.

7. Λάθος: It is a problem with the door. Σωστό: There is a problem with the door. Εξήγηση: Χρησιμοποιούμε το there is για να εισάγουμε κάτι που υπάρχει.

8. Λάθος: There have many people outside. Σωστό: There are many people outside. Εξήγηση: Χρησιμοποιούμε το there are, όχι το there have, για να μιλήσουμε για άτομα ή πράγματα που είναι παρόντα.
