તે શું છે?

અંગ્રેજીમાં સરખામણીમાં ઘણી વાર than અને the નો ઉપયોગ થાય છે.

જ્યારે બે વ્યક્તિઓ, વસ્તુઓ, સ્થળો કે પરિસ્થિતિઓની સરખામણી કરવામાં આવે ત્યારે comparative adjective કે adverb પછી than નો ઉપયોગ થાય છે.

• Tom is taller than Ben.
• This car is faster than mine.

જ્યારે એક વ્યક્તિ કે વસ્તુની સરખામણી સમગ્ર જૂથ સાથે કરવામાં આવે ત્યારે સામાન્ય રીતે superlative adjective પહેલાં definite article the નો ઉપયોગ થાય છે.

• Anna is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the cheapest option.

the શબ્દ the + comparative, the + comparative રચનામાં પણ વપરાય છે, જે દર્શાવે છે કે બે ફેરફારો એકબીજા સાથે જોડાયેલા છે.

• The more you practise, the easier it becomes.
• The earlier we leave, the better.

ક્યારે વાપરવું

જ્યારે સીધી રીતે બે વસ્તુઓની સરખામણી કરવામાં આવે ત્યારે comparative form પછી than નો ઉપયોગ કરો.

• My house is bigger than yours.
• Today is warmer than yesterday.

જ્યારે જૂથમાં કોઈ ગુણની સૌથી વધુ કે સૌથી ઓછી માત્રા ધરાવતી વ્યક્તિ કે વસ્તુ ઓળખવી હોય ત્યારે the + superlative નો ઉપયોગ કરો.

• She is the youngest person in the family.
• It is the most expensive restaurant here.

જ્યારે એક ફેરફાર બીજા ફેરફારને અસર કરે ત્યારે the + comparative, the + comparative નો ઉપયોગ કરો.

• The faster you drive, the more fuel you use.
• The longer I wait, the more tired I become.

આ રચના સાથેના ટૂંકા અભિવ્યક્તિઓ પણ સામાન્ય છે.

• The sooner, the better.
• The more, the merrier.

રચના

સીધી સરખામણી માટે:

Subject + be/verb + comparative + than + person/thing

• Jack is older than Sam.
• This train moves faster than that one.

more કે less સાથે:

Subject + be/verb + more/less + adjective + than + person/thing

• This hotel is more comfortable than the other one.
• The second task is less difficult than the first.

superlative માટે:

Subject + be + the + superlative + noun/complement

• Maya is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the most useful tool.

બે જોડાયેલા ફેરફારો દર્શાવવા માટે:

The + comparative + clause, the + comparative + clause

• The older I get, the more patient I become.
• The less you spend, the more you save.

આ ખાસ રચનામાં, the એ comparative pattern નો ભાગ છે. તે સામાન્ય રીતે definite article જેમ ચોક્કસ noun ને ઓળખતું નથી.

3. Her new job is more interesting than her old job.
4. Today is less stressful than yesterday.

અપવાદો

than પછી, અંગ્રેજીમાં શૈલી અને વાક્યરચના પર આધાર રાખીને વિવિધ pronoun forms વપરાઈ શકે છે.

• She is taller than me.
• She is taller than I am.

બંને સામાન્ય અને સાચા છે. બીજું સ્વરૂપ સામાન્ય રીતે વધુ formal હોય છે.

સાદી સરખામણીમાં સામાન્ય comparative adjective પહેલાં સામાન્ય રીતે definite article નો ઉપયોગ થતો નથી.

• Correct: John is taller than Mike.
• Incorrect: John is the taller than Mike.

જો કે, જ્યારે બરાબર બે વ્યક્તિઓ કે વસ્તુઓમાંથી પસંદગી કરવી હોય ત્યારે comparative સાથે the આવી શકે છે.

• John is the taller of the two brothers.

the + comparative, the + comparative રચના એક ખાસ નિશ્ચિત સરખામણી pattern છે.

સામાન્ય ભૂલો

1. Incorrect: My car is faster that yours. Correct: My car is faster than yours. Explanation: બે વસ્તુઓની સરખામણી કરતી વખતે comparative પછી than નો ઉપયોગ કરો.

2. Incorrect: Lisa is taller from Anna. Correct: Lisa is taller than Anna. Explanation: અંગ્રેજીમાં comparative પછી સામાન્ય રીતે than વપરાય છે, from નહીં.

3. Incorrect: This book is more interesting that the other one. Correct: This book is more interesting than the other one. Explanation: સરખામણીનો બીજો ભાગ શરૂ કરવા than નો ઉપયોગ કરો.

4. Incorrect: He is tallest student in the class. Correct: He is the tallest student in the class. Explanation: superlative adjectives સાથે સામાન્ય રીતે definite article the વપરાય છે.

5. Incorrect: This is most expensive hotel here. Correct: This is the most expensive hotel here. Explanation: superlative માં most + adjective પહેલાં the નો ઉપયોગ કરો.

6. Incorrect: More you practise, easier it becomes. Correct: The more you practise, the easier it becomes. Explanation: આ રચનામાં બંને comparative forms પહેલાં the નો ઉપયોગ કરો.

7. Incorrect: The faster you work, you finish sooner. Correct: The faster you work, the sooner you finish. Explanation: જોડાયેલા-ફેરફારની રચનામાં, બંને ભાગોમાં સામાન્ય રીતે the + comparative વપરાય છે.
