Wat is het?

There is en there are worden gebruikt om te zeggen dat iets bestaat of aanwezig is.

Gebruik there is met:

• één persoon of ding
• ontelbare zelfstandige naamwoorden

Gebruik there are met:

• twee of meer personen of dingen

Voorbeelden:

• There is a book on the table.
• There is some milk in the fridge.
• There are three chairs in the room.

De korte vorm van there is is there’s.

• There’s a café near my house.

Wanneer te gebruiken

Gebruik there is en there are om:

• nieuwe informatie te introduceren
• plaatsen te beschrijven
• te zeggen wat er beschikbaar is
• te zeggen hoeveel mensen of dingen aanwezig zijn
• te praten over gebeurtenissen of problemen

Gebruik van some en any

Gebruik some vooral in bevestigende zinnen.

• There is some bread.
• There are some apples.

Gebruik any vooral in ontkennende zinnen en vragen.

• There isn’t any bread.
• Are there any apples?

Uitzonderingen

In informele spraak wordt there’s soms gebruikt vóór een meervoudig zelfstandig naamwoord.

• There’s two people outside.

Dit komt veel voor in gesprekken, maar there are is de standaardvorm.

• There are two people outside.

De uitdrukking there is betekent niet hetzelfde als it is.

• There is a café near the station. — Er bestaat een café daar.
• It is near the station. — Een bekend persoon of ding is vlakbij het station.

Gebruik there was en there were voor het verleden.

• There was a problem yesterday.
• There were many people at the event.
