அது என்ன?

ஒப்பீட்டு பெயரடைகள் (Comparative adjectives) இரண்டு நபர்கள், பொருட்கள், இடங்கள் அல்லது சூழ்நிலைகளை ஒப்பிடுவதற்குப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன.

ஒரு நபருக்கு அல்லது பொருளுக்கு மற்றொன்றை விட ஒரு பண்பு அதிகமாகவோ குறைவாகவோ உள்ளது என்பதை அவை காட்டுகின்றன.

பொதுவான ஒப்பீட்டு வடிவங்கள் பின்வருமாறு:

ஒப்பீட்டு பெயரடைக்குப் பிறகு than என்ற சொல் அடிக்கடி பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.

Tom is taller than Ben.

எப்போது பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும்

இரண்டு நபர்கள் அல்லது பொருட்களை ஒப்பிடும்போது ஒப்பீட்டு பெயரடைகளைப் பயன்படுத்தவும்.

• This car is faster than that car.
• My room is smaller than yours.

இரண்டு இடங்களை ஒப்பிடும்போது அவற்றைப் பயன்படுத்தவும்.

• Calgary is colder than Vancouver.

இரண்டு சூழ்நிலைகளை ஒப்பிடும்போது அவற்றைப் பயன்படுத்தவும்.

• Today is busier than yesterday.

பல நீளமான பெயரடைகளுடன் more + பெயரடை பயன்படுத்தவும்.

• This book is more interesting than that one.

ஒரு பண்பின் குறைந்த அளவைக் காட்ட less + பெயரடை பயன்படுத்தவும்.

• This restaurant is less expensive than the other one.

அமைப்பு

பல குறுகிய பெயரடைகளுக்கு, -er சேர்க்கவும்.

Subject + be + adjective-er + than + noun/pronoun

• tall → taller
• fast → faster
• old → older

எடுத்துக்காட்டு:

Anna is taller than Maria.

ஒரு பெயரடை -e இல் முடிந்தால், -r மட்டும் சேர்க்கவும்.

• nice → nicer
• large → larger

ஒரு குறுகிய பெயரடை ஒரு உயிரெழுத்து + ஒரு மெய்யெழுத்தில் முடிந்தால், இறுதி மெய்யெழுத்து அடிக்கடி இரட்டிப்பாக்கப்படும்.

• big → bigger
• hot → hotter

ஒரு பெயரடை மெய்யெழுத்து + -y இல் முடிந்தால், y ஐ i ஆக மாற்றி -er சேர்க்கவும்.

• happy → happier
• easy → easier

பல நீளமான பெயரடைகளுக்கு, more பயன்படுத்தவும்.

எடுத்துக்காட்டு:

This chair is more comfortable than that one.

குறைந்த அளவைக் காட்ட, less பயன்படுத்தவும்.

This task is less difficult than the last one.

விதிவிலக்குகள்

சில பெயரடைகள் ஒழுங்கற்ற ஒப்பீட்டு வடிவங்களைக் கொண்டுள்ளன, மேலும் வழக்கமான -er அல்லது more வடிவத்தைப் பயன்படுத்துவதில்லை.

• good → better
• bad → worse
• far → farther / further

more மற்றும் -er இரண்டையும் ஒன்றாகப் பொதுவாகப் பயன்படுத்தக்கூடாது.

பொதுவான தவறுகள்

1. Incorrect: She is more taller than me. Correct: She is taller than me. Explanation: ஒரே பெயரடையுடன் more மற்றும் -er இரண்டையும் பயன்படுத்தக்கூடாது.

2. Incorrect: This book is interestinger than that one. Correct: This book is more interesting than that one. Explanation: நீளமான பெயரடைகள் பொதுவாக -er க்குப் பதிலாக more பயன்படுத்துகின்றன.

3. Incorrect: My car is fast than yours. Correct: My car is faster than yours. Explanation: இரண்டு பொருட்களை ஒப்பிடும்போது ஒப்பீட்டு வடிவத்தைப் பயன்படுத்தவும்.

6. Incorrect: This box is biger than that one. Correct: This box is bigger than that one. Explanation: -er சேர்ப்பதற்கு முன் big இல் உள்ள இறுதி மெய்யெழுத்தை இரட்டிப்பாக்கவும்.

7. Incorrect: This test is easyer than the last one. Correct: This test is easier than the last one. Explanation: மெய்யெழுத்து + y இல் முடியும் பெயரடைகளில், -er சேர்ப்பதற்கு முன் y ஐ i ஆக மாற்றவும்.
