Що це таке?

В англійських порівняннях часто використовуються than і the.

Than вживається після прикметника або прислівника у вищому ступені, коли порівнюються дві людини, речі, місця або ситуації.

• Tom is taller than Ben.
• This car is faster than mine.

Означений артикль the зазвичай вживається перед прикметником у найвищому ступені, коли одна людина або річ порівнюється з цілою групою.

• Anna is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the cheapest option.

Слово the також вживається у конструкції the + comparative, the + comparative, щоб показати, що дві зміни пов'язані між собою.

• The more you practise, the easier it becomes.
• The earlier we leave, the better.

Коли вживати

Вживайте than після форми вищого ступеня, коли безпосередньо порівнюєте дві речі.

• My house is bigger than yours.
• Today is warmer than yesterday.

Вживайте the + superlative, коли вказуєте на особу або річ із найвищим або найнижчим ступенем якості в групі.

• She is the youngest person in the family.
• It is the most expensive restaurant here.

Вживайте the + comparative, the + comparative, коли одна зміна впливає на іншу зміну.

• The faster you drive, the more fuel you use.
• The longer I wait, the more tired I become.

Короткі вирази з цією структурою також поширені.

• The sooner, the better.
• The more, the merrier.

Структура

Для прямого порівняння:

Subject + be/verb + comparative + than + person/thing

• Jack is older than Sam.
• This train moves faster than that one.

З more або less:

Subject + be/verb + more/less + adjective + than + person/thing

• This hotel is more comfortable than the other one.
• The second task is less difficult than the first.

Для найвищого ступеня:

Subject + be + the + superlative + noun/complement

• Maya is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the most useful tool.

Щоб показати дві пов'язані зміни:

The + comparative + clause, the + comparative + clause

• The older I get, the more patient I become.
• The less you spend, the more you save.

У цій особливій структурі the є частиною моделі вищого ступеня. Воно не вказує на конкретний іменник так, як це зазвичай робить означений артикль.

Винятки

Після than в англійській мові можуть вживатися різні форми займенників залежно від стилю та структури речення.

• She is taller than me.
• She is taller than I am.

Обидві форми поширені й правильні. Друга форма зазвичай більш формальна.

Означений артикль зазвичай не вживається перед звичайним прикметником у вищому ступені в простому порівнянні.

• Correct: John is taller than Mike.
• Incorrect: John is the taller than Mike.

Однак the може вживатися з вищим ступенем, коли йдеться про вибір між рівно двома людьми або речами.

• John is the taller of the two brothers.

Структура the + comparative, the + comparative — це особлива стала модель порівняння.

Поширені помилки

1. Incorrect: My car is faster that yours. Correct: My car is faster than yours. Explanation: Вживайте than після вищого ступеня, коли порівнюєте дві речі.
