Какво представлява това?

В английските сравнения често се използват than и the.

Than се използва след сравнителна форма на прилагателно или наречие, когато се сравняват двама души, два предмета, две места или две ситуации.

• Tom is taller than Ben.
• This car is faster than mine.

Определителният член the обикновено се използва пред прилагателно в превъзходна степен, когато един човек или предмет се сравнява с цяла група.

• Anna is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the cheapest option.

Думата the се използва също в конструкцията the + comparative, the + comparative, за да се покаже, че две промени са свързани.

• The more you practise, the easier it becomes.
• The earlier we leave, the better.

Кога се използва

Използвайте than след сравнителна форма, когато сравнявате пряко два предмета или две неща.

• My house is bigger than yours.
• Today is warmer than yesterday.

Структура

За пряко сравнение:

Subject + be/verb + comparative + than + person/thing

• Jack is older than Sam.
• This train moves faster than that one.

С more или less:

Subject + be/verb + more/less + adjective + than + person/thing

• This hotel is more comfortable than the other one.
• The second task is less difficult than the first.

За превъзходна степен:

Subject + be + the + superlative + noun/complement

• Maya is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the most useful tool.

За да се покажат две свързани промени:

The + comparative + clause, the + comparative + clause

• The older I get, the more patient I become.
• The less you spend, the more you save.

В тази специална структура the е част от сравнителната конструкция. То не посочва конкретно съществително по обичайния начин, по който го прави определителният член.

Изключения

След than в английски може да се използват различни форми на местоимението в зависимост от стила и структурата на изречението.

• She is taller than me.
• She is taller than I am.

И двете са често срещани и правилни. Втората форма обикновено е по-официална.

Определителният член обикновено не се използва пред обикновено прилагателно в сравнителна степен в просто сравнение.

• Correct: John is taller than Mike.
• Incorrect: John is the taller than Mike.

Въпреки това the може да се появи със сравнителна форма, когато се избира между точно двама души или два предмета.

• John is the taller of the two brothers.

Структурата the + comparative, the + comparative е специална фиксирана сравнителна конструкция.
