Mikä se on?

Can, can’t, could ja couldn’t ovat modaalisia verbejä.

Niitä käytetään puhuttaessa:

• nykyisestä kyvystä
• menneestä kyvystä
• luvasta
• pyynnöistä
• mahdollisuudesta

Can on myönteinen muoto.

• I can swim.

Can’t on lyhenne muodosta cannot.

• I can’t drive.

Could käytetään usein menneestä kyvystä tai kohteliaista pyynnöistä.

• She could read when she was four.
• Could you help me?

Couldn’t on lyhenne muodosta could not.

• We couldn’t find the address.

Milloin käyttää

Käytä can-muotoa nykyisestä kyvystä.

• He can speak English.
• I can cook.

Käytä can’t-muotoa, kun joku ei pysty tekemään jotain.

• She can’t swim.
• We can’t come today.
