Mikä se on?

Englannin vertailuissa käytetään usein sanoja than ja the.

Than-sanaa käytetään komparatiivimuotoisen adjektiivin tai adverbin jälkeen, kun verrataan kahta henkilöä, asiaa, paikkaa tai tilannetta.

• Tom is taller than Ben.
• This car is faster than mine.

Määräinen artikkeli the sijoitetaan tavallisesti superlatiivimuotoisen adjektiivin eteen, kun yhtä henkilöä tai asiaa verrataan koko ryhmään.

• Anna is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the cheapest option.

Sanaa the käytetään myös rakenteessa the + komparatiivi, the + komparatiivi, kun halutaan osoittaa, että kaksi muutosta liittyvät toisiinsa.

• The more you practise, the easier it becomes.
• The earlier we leave, the better.

Milloin käytetään

Subjekti + be/verbi + komparatiivi + than + henkilö/asia

• Jack is older than Sam.

Kun käytät sanoja more tai less:

Subjekti + be/verbi + more/less + adjektiivi + than + henkilö/asia

• This hotel is more comfortable than the other one.
• The second task is less difficult than the first.

Superlatiivia varten:

Subjekti + be + the + superlatiivi + substantiivi/täydennys

• Maya is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the most useful tool.

Kahden toisiinsa liittyvän muutoksen osoittamiseen:

Poikkeukset

Than-sanan jälkeen englannissa voidaan käyttää eri pronominimuotoja tyylin ja lauserakenteen mukaan.

• She is taller than me.
• She is taller than I am.

Molemmat ovat yleisiä ja oikein. Jälkimmäinen muoto on yleensä muodollisempi.

Määräistä artikkelia ei tavallisesti käytetä tavallisen komparatiivimuotoisen adjektiivin edessä yksinkertaisessa vertailussa.

• Correct: John is taller than Mike.
• Incorrect: John is the taller than Mike.

The voi kuitenkin esiintyä komparatiivin kanssa, kun valitaan täsmälleen kahden henkilön tai asian välillä.
