Mikä se on?

There is ja there are -ilmauksia käytetään sanomaan, että jokin on olemassa tai läsnä.

Käytä there is -ilmausta, kun on kyse:

• yhdestä henkilöstä tai asiasta
• epälukuisista substantiiveista

Käytä there are -ilmausta, kun on kyse:

• kahdesta tai useammasta henkilöstä tai asiasta

Esimerkkejä:

• There is a book on the table.
• There is some milk in the fridge.
• There are three chairs in the room.

There is -ilmauksen lyhyt muoto on there’s.

• There’s a café near my house.

Milloin käytetään

Käytä there is ja there are -ilmauksia:

• uuden tiedon esittämiseen
• paikkojen kuvailemiseen
• sanomaan, mitä on saatavilla
• sanomaan, kuinka monta henkilöä tai asiaa on läsnä
• tapahtumista tai ongelmista puhumiseen

Käytä:

there is not + yksiköllinen tai epälukuinen substantiivi

Lyhyt muoto on there isn’t.

Käytä:

there are not + monikollinen substantiivi

• There are not enough chairs.
• There are not any shops nearby.

Lyhyt muoto on there aren’t.

Sanojen some ja any käyttö

Käytä some-sanaa pääasiassa myönteisissä lauseissa.

• There is some bread.
• There are some apples.

Käytä any-sanaa pääasiassa kielteisissä lauseissa ja kysymyksissä.

• There isn’t any bread.
• Are there any apples?

Poikkeukset

Epävirallisessa puheessa there’s-muotoa käytetään joskus ennen monikollista substantiivia.

• There’s two people outside.

Tämä on yleistä keskustelussa, mutta there are on standardimuoto.

• There are two people outside.

Ilmaus there is ei tarkoita samaa kuin it is.

• There is a café near the station. — Kahvila on olemassa siellä.
• It is near the station. — Tunnettu henkilö tai asia on aseman lähellä.

Käytä there was ja there were -muotoja menneestä ajasta puhuttaessa.

• There was a problem yesterday.
• There were many people at the event.

3. Väärin: There are some milk in the fridge. Oikein: There is some milk in the fridge. Selitys: Käytä there is -muotoa epälukuisten substantiivien kanssa.

4. Väärin: Is there any shops nearby? Oikein: Are there any shops nearby? Selitys: Käytä are there -muotoa monikollisten substantiivien kanssa.

5. Väärin: There isn’t no food. Oikein: There isn’t any food. Selitys: Vältä kaksoiskieltoa. Käytä any-sanaa isn’t-sanan jälkeen.

6. Väärin: Are there a bathroom here? Oikein: Is there a bathroom here? Selitys: Käytä is there -muotoa yksiköllisen substantiivin kanssa.

7. Väärin: It is a problem with the door. Oikein: There is a problem with the door. Selitys: Käytä there is -muotoa esitelläksesi jotain, mikä on olemassa.
