מה זה?

בהשוואות באנגלית משתמשים לעתים קרובות ב-than וב-the.

Than משמש אחרי שם תואר או תואר הפועל בהשוואה כאשר משווים בין שני אנשים, דברים, מקומות או מצבים.

• Tom is taller than Ben.
• This car is faster than mine.

תווית היידוע the משמשת בדרך כלל לפני שם תואר בשם ההפלגה (superlative) כאשר משווים אדם או דבר אחד לקבוצה שלמה.

• Anna is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the cheapest option.

מתי להשתמש

השתמשו ב-than אחרי צורת השוואה (comparative) כאשר משווים ישירות בין שני דברים.

• My house is bigger than yours.
• Today is warmer than yesterday.

השתמשו ב-the + superlative כאשר מזהים את האדם או הדבר בעל הדרגה הגבוהה ביותר או הנמוכה ביותר של תכונה בקבוצה.

• She is the youngest person in the family.
• It is the most expensive restaurant here.

השתמשו ב-the + comparative, the + comparative כאשר שינוי אחד משפיע על שינוי אחר.

• The faster you drive, the more fuel you use.
• The longer I wait, the more tired I become.

ביטויים קצרים עם מבנה זה נפוצים גם כן.

• The sooner, the better.
• The more, the merrier.

מבנה

להשוואה ישירה:

Subject + be/verb + comparative + than + person/thing

• Jack is older than Sam.
• This train moves faster than that one.

עם more או less:

Subject + be/verb + more/less + adjective + than + person/thing

• This hotel is more comfortable than the other one.
• The second task is less difficult than the first.

לצורת ההפלגה (superlative):

Subject + be + the + superlative + noun/complement

• Maya is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the most useful tool.

כדי להראות שני שינויים קשורים:

The + comparative + clause, the + comparative + clause

• The older I get, the more patient I become.
• The less you spend, the more you save.

במבנה מיוחד זה, the הוא חלק מתבנית ההשוואה. הוא אינו מזהה שם עצם מסוים בדרך הרגילה שבה תווית היידוע עושה זאת.

חריגים

אחרי than, באנגלית עשויות להופיע צורות שונות של כינויי גוף בהתאם לסגנון ולמבנה המשפט.

• She is taller than me.
• She is taller than I am.

שתי הצורות נפוצות ונכונות. הצורה השנייה היא בדרך כלל רשמית יותר.

תווית היידוע אינה משמשת בדרך כלל לפני שם תואר השוואתי רגיל בהשוואה פשוטה.

• Correct: John is taller than Mike.
• Incorrect: John is the taller than Mike.
