Čo to je?

Komparatívne prídavné mená sa používajú na porovnanie dvoch ľudí, vecí, miest alebo situácií.

Vyjadrujú, že jedna osoba alebo vec má viac alebo menej nejakej vlastnosti než iná.

Bežné komparatívne tvary zahŕňajú:

Slovo than sa často používa po komparatívnom prídavnom mene.

Tom is taller than Ben.

Kedy ich používať

Komparatívne prídavné mená používajte pri porovnávaní dvoch ľudí alebo vecí.

• This car is faster than that car.
• My room is smaller than yours.

Použite ich pri porovnávaní dvoch miest.

• Calgary is colder than Vancouver.

Použite ich pri porovnávaní dvoch situácií.

• Today is busier than yesterday.

S mnohými dlhšími prídavnými menami použite more + adjective.

• This book is more interesting than that one.

Použite less + adjective na vyjadrenie nižšej miery vlastnosti.

• This restaurant is less expensive than the other one.

Štruktúra

Pri mnohých krátkych prídavných menách pridajte -er.

Subject + be + adjective-er + than + noun/pronoun

• tall → taller
• fast → faster
• old → older

Príklad:

Anna is taller than Maria.

Ak sa prídavné meno končí na -e, pridajte len -r.

• nice → nicer
• large → larger

Ak sa krátke prídavné meno končí na jednu samohlásku + jednu spoluhlásku, posledná spoluhláska sa často zdvojuje.

• big → bigger
• hot → hotter

Ak sa prídavné meno končí na spoluhlásku + -y, zmeňte y na i a pridajte -er.

• happy → happier
• easy → easier

Pri mnohých dlhších prídavných menách použite more.

Subject + be + more + adjective + than + noun/pronoun

• more beautiful
• more comfortable
• more important

Príklad:

This chair is more comfortable than that one.

Na vyjadrenie nižšej miery použite less.

Subject + be + less + adjective + than + noun/pronoun

Príklad:

This task is less difficult than the last one.

Niektoré bežné prídavné mená majú nepravidelné komparatívne tvary.

Výnimky

Niektoré prídavné mená majú nepravidelné komparatívne tvary a nepoužívajú bežný vzor s -er alebo more.

• bad → worse
• far → farther / further

Zvyčajne nepoužívajte more a -er spolu.

Niektoré dvojslabičné prídavné mená môžu používať oba tvary v závislosti od prídavného mena a použitia.

Napriklad:

Bežné chyby

1. Incorrect: She is more taller than me. Correct: She is taller than me. Explanation: Nepoužívajte more a -er spolu s tým istým prídavným menom.

2. Incorrect: This book is interestinger than that one. Correct: This book is more interesting than that one. Explanation: Dlhšie prídavné mená zvyčajne používajú more namiesto -er.

3. Incorrect: My car is fast than yours. Correct: My car is faster than yours. Explanation: Pri porovnávaní dvoch vecí použite komparatívny tvar.

4. Incorrect: He is more good at tennis than me. Correct: He is better at tennis than me. Explanation: Komparatívny tvar slova good je better.
