Vad är det?

Adjektiv beskriver substantiv. De ger mer information om en person, plats, sak eller idé.

Vanliga adjektiv beskriver egenskaper som storlek, färg, ålder, form eller åsikt.

Exempel:

• a small house
• a red bag
• an old car
• a friendly teacher

Demonstrativa adjektiv pekar ut specifika substantiv. De är:

• this
• that
• these
• those

Ett demonstrativt adjektiv kommer alltid före ett substantiv.

Exempel:

• this book
• that building
• these shoes
• those people

När man använder dem

Använd vanliga adjektiv för att beskriva hur ett substantiv är.

Exempel:

• a beautiful garden
• a difficult question
• a cold morning

Använd demonstrativa adjektiv för att visa vilken person eller sak du menar.

Använd this för en person eller sak som är nära.

• this chair

Använd that för en person eller sak som är längre bort.

• that chair

Använd these för två eller fler personer eller saker som är nära.

• these chairs

Använd those för två eller fler personer eller saker som är längre bort.

• those chairs

Demonstrativa adjektiv kan också visa om något känns nära eller avlägset i tid.

Struktur

Vanliga adjektiv före substantiv

Den vanliga strukturen är:

artikel eller bestämning + adjektiv + substantiv

Vanliga adjektiv ändras inte för singular eller plural substantiv.

• a small box
• two small boxes

Vanliga adjektiv efter länkande verb

Adjektiv kan också komma efter verb som be, look, feel, seem och become.

Strukturen är:

subjekt + länkande verb + adjektiv

• The room is small.
• She looks tired.
• The water feels cold.

Demonstrativa adjektiv

Strukturen är:

demonstrativt adjektiv + substantiv

Använd this och that med singular substantiv.

• this apple
• that person

Använd these och those med plural substantiv.

• these apples
• those people

Ett demonstrativt adjektiv kan stå före ett annat adjektiv.

Strukturen är:

demonstrativt adjektiv + vanligt adjektiv + substantiv

• this old house
• that blue car
• these new shoes
• those large buildings

Undantag

Vissa adjektiv kommer vanligtvis efter substantivet eller pronomenet de beskriver.

• something useful
• someone special
• the people responsible

Vissa adjektiv används ofta efter ett länkande verb och placeras normalt inte direkt före ett substantiv.

• The child is asleep.
• She is afraid.

Demonstrativa adjektiv måste överensstämma med substantivet i numerus.
