Vad är det?

Superlativa adjektiv används för att jämföra en person, sak, plats eller situation med alla andra i en grupp.

De visar den högsta eller lägsta graden av en egenskap.

På engelska använder superlativa adjektiv normalt den bestämda artikeln the.

• fast → the fastest
• beautiful → the most beautiful
• expensive → the most expensive

När man använder det

Använd ett superlativt adjektiv när du jämför en person eller sak med en hel grupp.

• Emma is the tallest student in the class.
• This is the cheapest phone in the store.

Använd superlativ för att beskriva den högsta graden av en egenskap.

• It is the hottest day of the week.
• He is the fastest runner on the team.

Använd the most + adjective med många längre adjektiv.

• This is the most interesting book here.
• That is the most expensive restaurant in town.

Använd the least + adjective för den lägsta graden av en egenskap.

• This is the least difficult exercise.
• It is the least expensive option.

Struktur

För många korta adjektiv, lägg till -est.

Subjekt + be + the + adjektiv-est + substantiv/komplement

• tall → the tallest
• small → the smallest
• fast → the fastest

Exempel:

Leo is the tallest student in the class.

Om ett adjektiv slutar på -e, lägg bara till -st.

• nice → the nicest
• large → the largest

Om ett kort adjektiv slutar på en vokal + en konsonant, dubbeltecknas den sista konsonanten ofta.

• big → the biggest
• hot → the hottest

Om ett adjektiv slutar på konsonant + -y, ändra y till i och lägg till -est.

• happy → the happiest
• easy → the easiest

För många längre adjektiv, använd the most.

Subjekt + be + the most + adjektiv + substantiv/komplement

• the most beautiful
• the most comfortable
• the most important

Exempel:

This is the most comfortable chair in the room.

För att visa den lägsta graden, använd the least.

Subjekt + be + the least + adjektiv + substantiv/komplement

Exempel:

This is the least expensive hotel nearby.

Vissa adjektiv har oregelbundna superlativa former.

• good → the best
• bad → the worst
• far → the farthest / the furthest

Använd normalt inte både most och -est med samma adjektiv.

Den bestämda artikeln the används normalt före ett superlativt adjektiv när adjektivet beskriver ett substantiv.

• She is the fastest runner.
• This is the best option.

När ett possessivt ord redan identifierar substantivet, används inte the.

• my best friend
• her biggest problem
• our most important task

Vissa tvåstaviga adjektiv kan använda antingen -est eller most, beroende på adjektivet och användningen.

• the cleverest / the most clever
• the quietest / the most quiet

Vanliga misstag

1. Incorrect: She is tallest student in the class. Correct: She is the tallest student in the class. Explanation: Superlativa adjektiv använder normalt the före adjektivet.

2. Incorrect: This is most expensive car here. Correct: This is the most expensive car here. Explanation: Använd the före most + adjective i en superlativ.

3. Incorrect: He is the most tallest boy in the group. Correct: He is the tallest boy in the group. Explanation: Använd inte både most och -est med samma adjektiv.

4. Incorrect: This is the beautifullest place here. Correct: This is the most beautiful place here. Explanation: Längre adjektiv använder vanligtvis the most istället för -est.

5. Incorrect: Today is the hotest day of the week. Correct: Today is the hottest day of the week. Explanation: Dubbelteckna den sista konsonanten i hot innan du lägger till -est.

6. Incorrect: This is the easyest question. Correct: This is the easiest question. Explanation: Med adjektiv som slutar på konsonant + y, ändra y till i innan du lägger till -est.

7. Incorrect: He is my the best friend. Correct: He is my best friend. Explanation: Använd inte the när ett possessivt ord som my redan identifierar substantivet.
