Vad är det?

There is och there are används för att säga att något finns eller är närvarande.

Använd there is med:

• en person eller sak
• oräknebara substantiv

Använd there are med:

• två eller fler personer eller saker

Exempel:

• There is a book on the table.
• There is some milk in the fridge.
• There are three chairs in the room.

Kortformen av there is är there’s.

• There’s a café near my house.

När man använder det

Använd there is och there are för att:

• introducera ny information
• beskriva platser
• säga vad som finns tillgängligt
• säga hur många personer eller saker som är närvarande
• prata om händelser eller problem

Använd some huvudsakligen i jakande meningar.

Undantag

I informellt tal används there’s ibland före ett plural substantiv.

• There’s two people outside.

Detta är vanligt i samtal, men there are är standardformen.

• There are two people outside.

Frasen there is betyder inte samma sak som it is.

• There is a café near the station. — Ett café finns där.
• It is near the station. — En känd person eller sak är nära stationen.

Använd there was och there were för dåtid.
