Than og det bestemte artikkelen

Hva er det?

Engelske sammenligninger bruker ofte than og the.

Than brukes etter et komparativt adjektiv eller adverb når to personer, ting, steder eller situasjoner sammenlignes.

  • Tom is taller than Ben.
  • This car is faster than mine.

  • Anna is the tallest student in the class.
  • This is the cheapest option.

Ordet the brukes også i strukturen the + komparativ, the + komparativ for å vise at to endringer er forbundet.

  • The more you practise, the easier it becomes.
  • The earlier we leave, the better.

Når det brukes

Bruk than etter en komparativ form når du direkte sammenligner to ting.

  • My house is bigger than yours.
  • Today is warmer than yesterday.

  • She is the youngest person in the family.
  • It is the most expensive restaurant here.

Bruk the + komparativ, the + komparativ når én endring påvirker en annen endring.

  • The faster you drive, the more fuel you use.
  • The longer I wait, the more tired I become.

  • The sooner, the better.
  • The more, the merrier.

Struktur

For en direkte sammenligning:

Subjekt + be/verb + komparativ + than + person/ting

  • Jack is older than Sam.
  • This train moves faster than that one.

Med more eller less:

Subjekt + be/verb + more/less + adjektiv + than + person/ting

  • This hotel is more comfortable than the other one.
  • The second task is less difficult than the first.

For en superlativ:

Subjekt + be + the + superlativ + substantiv/komplement

  • Maya is the tallest student in the class.
  • This is the most useful tool.
Form Eksempel
komparativ + than taller than
more + adjektiv + than more expensive than
less + adjektiv + than less difficult than
the + superlativ the tallest
the most + adjektiv the most expensive

For å vise to forbundne endringer:

The + komparativ + setning, the + komparativ + setning

  • The older I get, the more patient I become.
  • The less you spend, the more you save.

Eksempler

  1. My sister is younger than me.
  2. This phone is cheaper than that one.

Unntak

  • She is taller than me.
  • She is taller than I am.

  • Korrekt: John is taller than Mike.
  • Feil: John is the taller than Mike.

Men the kan forekomme med en komparativ når man velger mellom nøyaktig to personer eller ting.

  • John is the taller of the two brothers.

Strukturen the + komparativ, the + komparativ er et spesielt fast sammenligningsmønster.
