Mis see on?
Inglise võrdlustes kasutatakse sageli sõnu than ja the.
Than kasutatakse kesk- või ülivõrdes omadussõna või määrsõna järel, kui võrreldakse kahte inimest, asja, kohta või olukorda.
- Tom is taller than Ben.
- This car is faster than mine.
Määravat artiklit the kasutatakse tavaliselt ülivõrdes omadussõna ees, kui üht inimest või asja võrreldakse terve rühmaga.
- Anna is the tallest student in the class.
- This is the cheapest option.
Sõna the kasutatakse ka konstruktsioonis the + comparative, the + comparative, et näidata, et kaks muutust on omavahel seotud.
- The more you practise, the easier it becomes.
- The earlier we leave, the better.
Millal kasutada
Kasuta than keskvõrde järel, kui võrdled otseselt kahte asja.
- My house is bigger than yours.
- Today is warmer than yesterday.
Kasuta the + superlative, kui osutad inimesele või asjale, millel on rühmas kõrgeim või madalaim omaduse aste.
- She is the youngest person in the family.
- It is the most expensive restaurant here.
Kasuta the + comparative, the + comparative, kui üks muutus mõjutab teist muutust.
- The faster you drive, the more fuel you use.
- The longer I wait, the more tired I become.
Lühikesed väljendid selle konstruktsiooniga on samuti tavalised.
- The sooner, the better.
- The more, the merrier.

|---|---|
| comparative + than | taller than |
| more + adjective + than | more expensive than |
| less + adjective + than | less difficult than |

Selles erilises konstruktsioonis on the osa keskvõrdluse mustrist. See ei osuta konkreetsele nimisõnale nii, nagu määrav artikkel tavaliselt teeb.
