Mis see on?

Imperatiive kasutatakse selleks, et öelda kellelegi, mida teha või mida mitte teha.

Jaataiv imperatiiv annab käsu, juhendi, palve, kutse või nõuande.

• Open the door.
• Please sit down.
• Take some water.

Eitav imperatiiv ütleb kellelegi, et ta ei peaks midagi tegema.

• Do not open the door.
• Don’t touch that.
• Don’t be late.

Imperatiivid tavaliselt ei sisalda alust. Mõistetav alus on you.

Millal kasutada

Kasuta imperatiive järgmistel juhtudel:

• käsud: Stop talking.
• juhised: Turn left at the traffic lights.
• palved: Please help me.
• nõuanded: Get some rest.
• hoiatused: Be careful.
• kutsed: Come in.
• keelud: Don’t park here.

Kasuta please, et muuta imperatiiv viisakamaks.

• Please close the window.
• Wait here, please.

Struktuur

Jaatavad imperatiivid

Kasuta verbi põhivormi.

Verb on sama nii ühe kui ka mitme inimese puhul.

• Come here, Anna.
• Come here, everyone.

Eitavad imperatiivid

Kasuta do not või don’t enne verbi põhivormi.

Do not on formaalsem kui don’t.

Imperatiivid verbiga be

Kasuta be jaatavates imperatiivides.

• Be quiet.
• Be careful.

Kasuta don’t be eitavates imperatiivides.

• Don’t be rude.
• Don’t be afraid.

Imperatiivid sõnaga let’s

Kasuta let’s + põhiverb, et soovitada koos midagi teha.

• Let’s go home.
• Let’s take a break.

Kasuta let’s not + põhiverb eitava soovituse jaoks.

• Let’s not argue.
• Let’s not wait too long.

Erandid

Alust you mõnikord lisatakse rõhutamiseks, vastandamiseks või tugeva emotsiooni väljendamiseks.

• You stay here.
• You be careful.
• You take this box, and Mark can take the other one.

See kasutus võib kõlada sunnivalt, seega tuleks seda kasutada ettevaatlikult.

Kasuta always ja never enne põhiverbi imperatiivides.

• Always check the door.
• Never share your password.

Ära kasuta do not never, sest see loob vale topelteituse.

Levinud vead

1. Vale: You close the door. Õige: Close the door. Selgitus: Imperatiivid tavaliselt ei sisalda alust you.

2. Vale: To open the window. Õige: Open the window. Selgitus: Kasuta põhiverbi ilma to-ta.

3. Vale: Don’t to touch that. Õige: Don’t touch that. Selgitus: Kasuta don’t + põhiverb ilma to-ta.

4. Vale: Not open the door. Õige: Don’t open the door. Selgitus: Kasuta do not või don’t, et moodustada eitav imperatiiv.
