Nó là gì?

There is và there are được dùng để nói rằng một thứ gì đó tồn tại hoặc hiện diện.

Dùng there is với:

• một người hoặc một vật
• danh từ không đếm được

Dùng there are với:

• hai người hoặc vật trở lên

Ví dụ:

• There is a book on the table.
• There is some milk in the fridge.
• There are three chairs in the room.

Dạng rút gọn của there is là there’s.

• There’s a café near my house.

Khi nào dùng

Dùng there is và there are để:

• giới thiệu thông tin mới
• miêu tả nơi chốn
• nói về những gì có sẵn
• nói có bao nhiêu người hoặc vật hiện diện
• nói về sự kiện hoặc vấn đề

Ví dụ:

• There is a bank next to the station.
• There are two bathrooms in the apartment.
• There is some food in the kitchen.
• There are many people outside.
• There is a problem with the computer.

Câu khẳng định

Dùng:

there is + danh từ số ít

• There is a shop nearby.
• There is one window in the room.

Dùng:

there is + danh từ không đếm được

• There is some water in the bottle.
• There is a lot of traffic today.

Dùng:

there are + danh từ số nhiều

• There are two shops nearby.
• There are several windows in the room.

Câu phủ định

Dùng:

there is not + danh từ số ít hoặc không đếm được

• There is not a pharmacy nearby.
• There is not much time.

Dạng rút gọn là there isn’t.

Dùng:

there are not + danh từ số nhiều

• There are not enough chairs.
• There are not any shops nearby.

Dạng rút gọn là there aren’t.

Câu hỏi

Dùng:

Is there + danh từ số ít hoặc không đếm được?

• Is there a bathroom here?
• Is there any coffee left?

Dùng:

Are there + danh từ số nhiều?

• Are there any questions?
• Are there two bedrooms?

Câu trả lời ngắn

• Is there a bank nearby? — Yes, there is.
• Is there any milk? — No, there isn’t.
• Are there any tickets left? — Yes, there are.
• Are there many people? — No, there aren’t.

Dùng some và any

Dùng some chủ yếu trong câu khẳng định.

• There is some bread.
• There are some apples.

Dùng any chủ yếu trong câu phủ định và câu hỏi.

• There isn’t any bread.
• Are there any apples?

Ngoại lệ

Trong giao tiếp thân mật, there’s đôi khi được dùng trước danh từ số nhiều.

• There’s two people outside.

Điều này phổ biến trong hội thoại, nhưng there are là dạng chuẩn.

• There are two people outside.

Cụm từ there is không có nghĩa giống it is.

• There is a café near the station. — Một quán cà phê tồn tại ở đó.
• It is near the station. — Một người hoặc vật đã biết ở gần nhà ga.

Dùng there was và there were cho quá khứ.

• There was a problem yesterday.
• There were many people at the event.
