¿Qué es?
Las preposiciones son palabras cortas que conectan un sustantivo o pronombre con otra parte de la oración.
A menudo indican:
- lugar: in, on, under, next to
- tiempo: at, on, in
- movimiento: to, into, from
- posición o dirección: behind, between, across
Ejemplos:
- The keys are on the table.
- We meet at six.
- She walked to the station.
- The cat is under the chair.
Cuándo usar
Usa las preposiciones de lugar para indicar dónde está algo.
- in the room
- on the desk
- under the bed
- next to the window
- between two buildings
Usa las preposiciones de tiempo para indicar cuándo ocurre algo.
- at five o’clock
- on Monday
- in July
Usa las preposiciones de movimiento para indicar dirección.
- go to school
- walk into the room
- come from Canada
- run across the street
Estructura
Una preposición generalmente va antes de un sustantivo, pronombre o sintagma nominal.

Excepciones
Algunas expresiones usan preposiciones fijas y deben aprenderse como frases completas.

- in bed

- good at
Las preposiciones pueden diferir entre idiomas, por lo que una traducción directa no siempre es correcta.
Algunos verbos no usan preposición en inglés.
- Correcto: enter the room
- Incorrecto: enter into the room
Sin embargo, go into the room es correcto porque into indica movimiento.
