Pasado Simple de “To Be”

¿Qué es?

Las formas del pasado simple de to be son was y were.

Usa was con:

  • I
  • he
  • she
  • it

Usa were con:

  • you
  • we
  • they

Ejemplos:

  • I was tired.
  • She was at home.
  • We were busy.
  • They were happy.

Las formas negativas son was not y were not.

Las formas cortas comunes son:

  • was not → wasn’t
  • were not → weren’t

Cuándo usar

Usa el pasado simple de to be para hablar de:

  • estados pasados: I was tired.
  • sentimientos pasados: She was nervous.
  • lugares pasados: They were at school.
  • edades pasadas: He was ten years old.
  • descripciones pasadas: The room was small.
  • situaciones pasadas: We were very busy.
  • fechas y horas pasadas: It was Monday.

Respuestas cortas

  • Was he late? — Yes, he was.
  • Was she tired? — No, she wasn’t.
  • Were they at school? — Yes, they were.
  • Were you busy? — No, I wasn’t.

Excepciones

Usa were en lugar de was en algunas expresiones formales o irreales con I, he, she o it.

  • If I were you, I would wait.
  • I wish she were here.

En inglés informal, a veces se usa was en estas expresiones, pero were es la forma estándar.

Errores comunes

  1. Incorrecto: I were tired yesterday. Correcto: I was tired yesterday. Explicación: Usa was con I.

  2. Incorrecto: They was at home. Correcto: They were at home. Explicación: Usa were con they.

  3. Incorrecto: She didn’t be happy. Correcto: She wasn’t happy. Explicación: No uses didn’t con el pasado simple de to be.

  4. Incorrecto: Did he was at work? Correcto: Was he at work? Explicación: No uses did en preguntas con was o were.

  5. Incorrecto: We wasn’t ready. Correcto: We weren’t ready. Explicación: Usa weren’t con we.

  6. Incorrecto: Were she at school? Correcto: Was she at school? Explicación: Usa was con she.

  7. Incorrecto: I was not at home? Correcto: Was I not at home? Explicación: Coloca was antes del sujeto para formar una pregunta.

  8. Incorrecto: They were not tired? Correcto: Weren’t they tired? Explicación: En preguntas, coloca were o weren’t antes del sujeto.
