Than y el artículo definido

¿Qué es?

Las comparaciones en inglés suelen usar than y the.

  • Tom is taller than Ben.
  • This car is faster than mine.

  • Anna is the tallest student in the class.
  • This is the cheapest option.

La palabra the también se usa en la estructura the + comparativo, the + comparativo para mostrar que dos cambios están conectados.

  • The more you practise, the easier it becomes.
  • The earlier we leave, the better.

  • My house is bigger than yours.
  • Today is warmer than yesterday.

  • She is the youngest person in the family.
  • It is the most expensive restaurant here.

Usa the + comparativo, the + comparativo cuando un cambio afecta a otro cambio.

  • The faster you drive, the more fuel you use.
  • The longer I wait, the more tired I become.

  • The sooner, the better.
  • The more, the merrier.

Estructura

Para una comparación directa:

Sujeto + be/verbo + comparativo + than + persona/cosa

  • Jack is older than Sam.
  • This train moves faster than that one.

Con more o less:

Sujeto + be/verbo + more/less + adjetivo + than + persona/cosa

  • This hotel is more comfortable than the other one.
  • The second task is less difficult than the first.

Para un superlativo:

Sujeto + be + the + superlativo + sustantivo/complemento

  • Maya is the tallest student in the class.
  • This is the most useful tool.
Forma Ejemplo
comparativo + than taller than
more + adjetivo + than more expensive than
less + adjetivo + than less difficult than
the + superlativo the tallest
the most + adjetivo the most expensive

Para mostrar dos cambios conectados:

The + comparativo + oración, the + comparativo + oración

  • The older I get, the more patient I become.
  • The less you spend, the more you save.

  • She is taller than me.
  • She is taller than I am.

  • Correcto: John is taller than Mike.
  • Incorrecto: John is the taller than Mike.
