Imperativos afirmativos y negativos

¿Qué es?

Los imperativos se usan para decirle a alguien qué hacer o qué no hacer.

Un imperativo positivo da una orden, instrucción, petición, invitación o consejo.

  • Open the door.
  • Please sit down.
  • Take some water.

Un imperativo negativo le dice a alguien que no haga algo.

  • Do not open the door.
  • Don’t touch that.
  • Don’t be late.

Los imperativos generalmente no incluyen un sujeto. El sujeto implícito es you.

Cuándo usar

Usa imperativos para:

  • órdenes: Stop talking.
  • instrucciones: Turn left at the traffic lights.
  • peticiones: Please help me.
  • consejos: Get some rest.
  • advertencias: Be careful.
  • invitaciones: Come in.
  • prohibiciones: Don’t park here.

Usa please para hacer un imperativo más cortés.

  • Please close the window.
  • Wait here, please.

Estructura

Imperativos positivos

Usa la forma base del verbo.

Estructura Ejemplo
verbo base Sit down.
verbo base + objeto Close the door.
please + verbo base Please wait here.
verbo base + please Help me, please.

El verbo es el mismo para una persona o varias personas.

  • Come here, Anna.
  • Come here, everyone.

Imperativos negativos

Usa do not o don’t antes de la forma base del verbo.

Estructura Ejemplo
do not + verbo base Do not enter.
don’t + verbo base Don’t enter.
please + do not + verbo base Please do not touch this.
don’t + be + adjetivo Don’t be noisy.

Do not es más formal que don’t.

Imperativos con be

Usa be en imperativos positivos.

  • Be quiet.
  • Be careful.

Usa don’t be en imperativos negativos.

  • Don’t be rude.
  • Don’t be afraid.

Imperativos con let’s

Usa let’s + verbo base para sugerir hacer algo juntos.

  • Let’s go home.
  • Let’s take a break.

Usa let’s not + verbo base para una sugerencia negativa.

  • Let’s not argue.
  • Let’s not wait too long.

Ejemplos

  1. Close the window, please.
  2. Don’t use your phone here.
  3. Turn right after the bank.
  4. Please do not leave your bag unattended.
  5. Be careful on the stairs.
  6. Don’t be late for the meeting.
  7. Take this medicine with food.
  8. Come and sit with us.
  9. Let’s order some food.
  10. Let’s not talk about work tonight.

Excepciones

El sujeto you a veces se incluye para enfatizar, contrastar o expresar una emoción fuerte.

  • You stay here.
  • You be careful.
  • You take this box, and Mark can take the other one.

Este uso puede sonar enérgico, por lo que debe usarse con cuidado.

Usa always y never antes del verbo principal en imperativos.

  • Always check the door.
  • Never share your password.

No uses do not never, porque crea un doble negativo incorrecto.

Errores comunes

  1. Incorrecto: You close the door. Correcto: Close the door. Explicación: Los imperativos generalmente no incluyen el sujeto you.

  2. Incorrecto: To open the window. Correcto: Open the window. Explicación: Usa el verbo base sin to.

  3. Incorrecto: Don’t to touch that. Correcto: Don’t touch that. Explicación: Usa don’t + verbo base sin to.

  4. Incorrecto: Not open the door. Correcto: Don’t open the door. Explicación: Usa do not o don’t para formar un imperativo negativo.

  5. Incorrecto: Don’t be touch the machine. Correcto: Don’t touch the machine. Explicación: Usa be solo antes de un adjetivo, sustantivo o descripción similar.

  6. Incorrecto: Be not noisy. Correcto: Don’t be noisy. Explicación: Usa don’t be para imperativos negativos con be.

  7. Incorrecto: Let’s to go home. Correcto: Let’s go home. Explicación: Usa el verbo base sin to después de let’s.
