Adjectifs communs et démonstratifs

Qu’est-ce que c’est ?

Les adjectifs décrivent les noms. Ils donnent plus d’informations sur une personne, un lieu, une chose ou une idée.

Les adjectifs qualificatifs décrivent des qualités telles que la taille, la couleur, l’âge, la forme ou l’opinion.

Exemples :

  • a small house
  • a red bag
  • an old car
  • a friendly teacher

Les adjectifs démonstratifs désignent des noms précis. Ce sont :

  • this
  • that
  • these
  • those

Un adjectif démonstratif se place toujours avant un nom.

Exemples :

  • this book
  • that building
  • these shoes
  • those people

Quand les utiliser

Utilisez les adjectifs qualificatifs pour décrire à quoi ressemble un nom.

Exemples :

  • a beautiful garden
  • a difficult question
  • a cold morning

Utilisez les adjectifs démonstratifs pour montrer de quelle personne ou de quelle chose vous parlez.

Utilisez this pour une personne ou une chose qui est proche.

  • this chair

Utilisez that pour une personne ou une chose qui est plus éloignée.

  • that chair

Utilisez these pour deux personnes ou choses, ou plus, qui sont proches.

  • these chairs

Utilisez those pour deux personnes ou choses, ou plus, qui sont plus éloignées.

  • those chairs

Les adjectifs démonstratifs peuvent aussi montrer si quelque chose semble proche ou éloigné dans le temps.

  • this week
  • that day
  • these months
  • those years

Structure

Les adjectifs qualificatifs avant les noms

La structure habituelle est :

article ou déterminant + adjectif + nom

Les adjectifs qualificatifs ne changent pas au singulier ou au pluriel.

  • a small box
  • two small boxes

Les adjectifs qualificatifs après les verbes d’état

Les adjectifs peuvent aussi se placer après des verbes comme be, look, feel, seem et become.

La structure est :

sujet + verbe d’état + adjectif

  • The room is small.
  • She looks tired.
  • The water feels cold.

Les adjectifs démonstratifs

La structure est :

adjectif démonstratif + nom

Utilisez this et that avec des noms singuliers.

  • this apple
  • that person

Utilisez these et those avec des noms pluriels.

  • these apples
  • those people

Un adjectif démonstratif peut se placer avant un autre adjectif.

La structure est :

adjectif démonstratif + adjectif qualificatif + nom

  • this old house
  • that blue car
  • these new shoes
  • those large buildings

Exemples

  1. She has a beautiful voice.
  2. This coffee is very hot.
  3. That tall man is my neighbor.
  4. These fresh apples taste good.
  5. Those old buildings are empty.
  6. We live in a small apartment.
  7. This difficult question needs more time.
  8. I do not like that loud music.
  9. These comfortable chairs are new.
  10. Those children look happy.

Exceptions

Certains adjectifs se placent généralement après le nom ou le pronom qu’ils décrivent.

  • something useful
  • someone special
  • the people responsible

Certains adjectifs sont couramment utilisés après un verbe d’état et ne se placent normalement pas directement avant un nom.

  • The child is asleep.
  • She is afraid.

Les adjectifs démonstratifs doivent s’accorder avec le nom en nombre.

  • this book
  • these books
  • that car
  • those cars

Erreurs courantes

  1. Incorrect : this books Correct : these books Explanation : Utilisez these avec des noms pluriels.

  2. Incorrect : those car Correct : that car Explanation : Utilisez that avec un nom singulier.

  3. Incorrect : a car red Correct : a red car Explanation : Un adjectif qualificatif se place généralement avant le nom.

  4. Incorrect : these new shoe Correct : these new shoes Explanation : Un adjectif démonstratif pluriel demande un nom pluriel.

  5. Incorrect : this is beautiful house Correct : this is a beautiful house Explanation : Un nom dénombrable singulier a généralement besoin d’un article ou d’un autre déterminant.

  6. Incorrect : a olds building Correct : an old building Explanation : Les adjectifs ne prennent pas de marque du pluriel, et an s’utilise devant un son voyelle.

  7. Incorrect : the room is coldly Correct : the room is cold Explanation : Utilisez un adjectif après le verbe d’état is.

  8. Incorrect : that two houses Correct : those two houses Explanation : Utilisez those avec des noms pluriels.
