これは何か？
Can、can’t、could、couldn’t は法助動詞です。
これらは以下のことを表すのに使われます：
- 現在の能力
- 過去の能力
- 許可
- 依頼
- 可能性
Can は肯定形です。
- I can swim.
Can’t は cannot の短縮形です。
- I can’t drive.
Could はよく過去の能力や丁寧な依頼に使われます。
- She could read when she was four.
- Could you help me?
Couldn’t は could not の短縮形です。
- We couldn’t find the address.
いつ使うか
現在の能力には can を使います。
- He can speak English.
- I can cook.
誰かが何かをする能力がないときは can’t を使います。
- She can’t swim.
- We can’t come today.
許可を求めたり与えたりするときは can を使います。
- Can I use your phone?
- You can leave early.
過去の一般的な能力には could を使います。
- I could run fast when I was younger.
- They could speak French as children.
過去の能力の欠如や失敗した状況には couldn’t を使います。
- He couldn’t read the sign.
- We couldn’t open the door.
依頼をするときは can または could を使います。

- Could you close the window?
依頼において、could は通常 can よりも丁寧です。
構造
can、can’t、could、couldn’t の後には動詞の原形を使います。

例外
過去の一般的な能力には could を使います。
- She could play the piano when she was young.
過去の特定の成功した行動には、was able to の方が自然なことがよくあります。
- We were able to fix the problem yesterday.
しかし、特定の失敗した行動には couldn’t が自然です。
- We couldn’t fix the problem yesterday.
Cannot は一語で書きます。

can not という形は、not が別の句に属する場合にのみ可能ですが、この用法はまれです。
