比較級の形容詞は、2人の人、場所、物、または考えを比較します。
- トムはベンより背が高い。
- この本はあの本よりもっと面白い。
最上級の形容詞は、1人の人、場所、物、または考えをグループ全体と比較します。それらは、性質の最高度または最低度を示します。
- トムはクラスで一番背が高い。
- これはここで一番面白い本です。
いつ使うか
2つのことを比較するときは、比較級の形容詞を使います。
- 私の車はあなたの車より速い。
- 今日は昨日より寒い。
- この練習問題は最初の問題より難しい。
比較級の後には、しばしばthanが続きます。
3つ以上のことを比較するとき、または1つのことをグループ全体と比較するときは、最上級の形容詞を使います。
- アンナは彼女の家族で一番若い。
- それはメニューで一番高価な料理でした。
- 2月は1年で一番短い月です。
最上級は通常、形容詞の前にtheを使います。
構造
短い形容詞
ほとんどの1音節の形容詞では、比較級には**-erを、最上級には-est**を追加します。

一部の2音節の形容詞は、-er/-estまたはmore/the mostのどちらも使えます。
- cleverer または more clever
- simpler または more simple
- quieter または more quiet
両方の形を一緒に使わないでください。
- more beautiful、more beautifuller ではありません
- faster、more faster ではありません
Olderとoldestは、年齢を表す通常の形です。
Elderとeldestは、同じ家族の人々に対して使われることがあります。
