比較級の形容詞は、2人の人、物、場所、または状況を比較するために使われます。

それらは、ある人や物が別の人や物よりも、ある性質をより多く、またはより少なく持っていることを示します。

一般的な比較級の形には次のようなものがあります：

than という語は、比較級の形容詞の後によく使われます。

Tom is taller than Ben.

いつ使うか

2人の人や物を比較するときに比較級の形容詞を使います。

• This car is faster than that car.
• My room is smaller than yours.

2つの場所を比較するときに使います。

• Calgary is colder than Vancouver.

2つの状況を比較するときに使います。

• Today is busier than yesterday.

多くの長い形容詞には more + 形容詞 を使います。

• This book is more interesting than that one.

ある性質の程度がより低いことを示すには less + 形容詞 を使います。

• This restaurant is less expensive than the other one.

構造

多くの短い形容詞には -er を付けます。

主語 + be + 形容詞-er + than + 名詞/代名詞

• tall → taller
• fast → faster
• old → older

例：

Anna is taller than Maria.

形容詞が -e で終わる場合は、-r だけを付けます。

• nice → nicer
• large → larger

短い形容詞が1つの母音 + 1つの子音で終わる場合、最後の子音はしばしば重ねられます。

例外

• far → farther / further
