Preposições Comuns

O que é?

Preposições são palavras curtas que conectam um substantivo ou pronome a outra parte de uma frase.

Elas frequentemente indicam:

  • lugar: in, on, under, next to
  • tempo: at, on, in
  • movimento: to, into, from
  • posição ou direção: behind, between, across

Exemplos:

  • As chaves estão on a mesa.
  • Nós nos encontramos at seis.
  • Ela andou to a estação.
  • O gato está under a cadeira.

Quando usar

Use preposições de lugar para mostrar onde algo está.

  • in the room
  • on the desk
  • under the bed
  • next to the window
  • between two buildings

Use preposições de tempo para mostrar quando algo acontece.

  • at five o’clock
  • on Monday
  • in July

Use preposições de movimento para mostrar direção.

  • go to school
  • walk into the room
  • come from Canada
  • run across the street

Estrutura

Uma preposição geralmente vem antes de um substantivo, pronome ou sintagma nominal.

Preposições comuns de lugar

in dentro de uma área ou espaço The milk is in the fridge.
on tocando uma superfície The book is on the table.
at um ponto ou lugar específico She is at the bus stop.
under mais baixo que algo The shoes are under the bed.
above mais alto que algo The picture is above the sofa.
behind na parte de trás de algo The garden is behind the house.
in front of antes ou à frente de algo The car is in front of the building.
next to ao lado de algo The bank is next to the shop.
between no meio de duas coisas The café is between the bank and the hotel.
near perto de algo We live near the station.

Preposições comuns de tempo

Preposições comuns de movimento

into movimento de fora para dentro He walked into the room.
out of movimento de dentro para fora They ran out of the house.
across de um lado para outro We walked across the bridge.
through de uma parte de algo para outra The train went through the tunnel.
along seguindo uma linha ou caminho They walked along the river.
past movendo-se além de algo She drove past the school.

Exemplos

  1. The phone is on the desk.
  2. She is waiting at the station.
  3. We live in a small apartment.
  4. The dog is under the table.
  5. I have a meeting on Tuesday.
  6. They moved here in 2024.
  7. He arrived at nine o’clock.
  8. She walked into the kitchen.
  9. We drove across the bridge.
  10. The supermarket is next to the bank.

Exceções

Algumas expressões usam preposições fixas e devem ser aprendidas como frases completas.

  • at home
  • at work
  • by car
  • on foot
  • in bed
  • on time
  • interested in
  • good at

As preposições podem diferir entre os idiomas, portanto, uma tradução direta nem sempre é correta.

Alguns verbos não usam preposição em inglês.

  • Correto: enter the room
  • Incorreto: enter into the room

No entanto, go into the room é correto porque into indica movimento.

Erros comuns

  1. Incorreto: I am in home. Correto: I am at home. Explicação: Use a expressão fixa at home.

  2. Incorreto: We will meet in Monday. Correto: We will meet on Monday. Explicação: Use on com dias.

  3. Incorreto: The meeting starts on 8:00. Correto: The meeting starts at 8:00. Explicação: Use at com horas exatas.

  4. Incorreto: She was born on 1995. Correto: She was born in 1995. Explicação: Use in com anos.

  5. Incorreto: The cat is in the table. Correto: The cat is under the table. Explicação: Use uma preposição que descreva corretamente a posição.

  6. Incorreto: He went in the room. Correto: He went into the room. Explicação: Use into para movimento de fora para dentro.

  7. Incorreto: We arrived to the airport. Correto: We arrived at the airport. Explicação: Use arrive at para um lugar específico.

  8. Incorreto: She entered into the office. Correto: She entered the office. Explicação: O verbo enter normalmente não precisa de into.
