Than e o Artigo Definido

O que é?

As comparações em inglês frequentemente usam than e the.

  • Tom is taller than Ben.
  • This car is faster than mine.

  • Anna is the tallest student in the class.
  • This is the cheapest option.

A palavra the também é usada na estrutura the + comparativo, the + comparativo para mostrar que duas mudanças estão conectadas.

  • The more you practise, the easier it becomes.
  • The earlier we leave, the better.

  • My house is bigger than yours.
  • Today is warmer than yesterday.

  • She is the youngest person in the family.
  • It is the most expensive restaurant here.

Use the + comparativo, the + comparativo quando uma mudança afeta outra mudança.

  • The faster you drive, the more fuel you use.
  • The longer I wait, the more tired I become.

  • The sooner, the better.
  • The more, the merrier.

Estrutura

Para uma comparação direta:

Sujeito + be/verbo + comparativo + than + pessoa/coisa

  • Jack is older than Sam.
  • This train moves faster than that one.

Com more ou less:

Sujeito + be/verbo + more/less + adjetivo + than + pessoa/coisa

  • This hotel is more comfortable than the other one.
  • The second task is less difficult than the first.

Para um superlativo:

Sujeito + be + the + superlativo + substantivo/complemento

  • Maya is the tallest student in the class.
  • This is the most useful tool.
Forma Exemplo
comparativo + than taller than
more + adjetivo + than more expensive than
less + adjetivo + than less difficult than
the + superlativo the tallest
the most + adjetivo the most expensive

Para mostrar duas mudanças conectadas:

The + comparativo + oração, the + comparativo + oração

  • The older I get, the more patient I become.
  • The less you spend, the more you save.

Nessa estrutura especial, the faz parte do padrão comparativo.

  • She is taller than me.
  • She is taller than I am.

  • Correct: John is taller than Mike.
  • Incorrect: John is the taller than Mike.

  • John is the taller of the two brothers.

A estrutura the + comparativo, the + comparativo é um padrão de comparação fixo especial.
