There Is e There Are

O que é?

There is e there are são usados para dizer que algo existe ou está presente.

Use there is com:

  • uma pessoa ou coisa
  • substantivos incontáveis

Use there are com:

  • duas ou mais pessoas ou coisas

Exemplos:

  • There is a book on the table.
  • There is some milk in the fridge.
  • There are three chairs in the room.

A forma abreviada de there is é there’s.

  • There’s a café near my house.

Quando usar

Use there is e there are para:

  • introduzir informações novas
  • descrever lugares
  • dizer o que está disponível
  • dizer quantas pessoas ou coisas estão presentes
  • falar sobre eventos ou problemas

Exemplos:

  • There is a bank next to the station.
  • There are two bathrooms in the apartment.
  • There is some food in the kitchen.
  • There are many people outside.

Frases negativas

Use:

there is not + substantivo singular ou incontável

A forma abreviada é there isn’t.

Use:

there are not + substantivo plural

  • There are not enough chairs.
  • There are not any shops nearby.

A forma abreviada é there aren’t.

Use:

Is there + substantivo singular ou incontável?

  • Is there a bathroom here?
  • Is there any coffee left?

Use:

Are there + substantivo plural?

  • Are there any questions?
  • Are there two bedrooms?

Respostas curtas

  • Is there a bank nearby? — Yes, there is.
  • Is there any milk? — No, there isn’t.
  • Are there any tickets left? — Yes, there are.
  • Are there many people? — No, there aren’t.

Usando some e any

Use some principalmente em frases afirmativas.

  • There is some bread.
  • There are some apples.

Use any principalmente em frases negativas e perguntas.

  • There isn’t any bread.
  • Are there any apples?

Exceções

Na fala informal, there’s às vezes é usado antes de um substantivo plural.

  • There’s two people outside.

Isso é comum em conversas, mas there are é a forma padrão.

  7. Incorreto: It is a problem with the door. Correto: There is a problem with the door. Explicação: Use there is para introduzir algo que existe.
