Present Continuous

O que é?

O Present Continuous é usado para falar de ações que estão acontecendo agora ou em torno do momento presente.

É formado com a forma presente do verbo to be e um verbo terminado em -ing.

Exemplos:

  • I am working.
  • She is reading.
  • They are playing outside.

As formas abreviadas são comuns no inglês do dia a dia.

  • I am → I’m
  • he is → he’s
  • she is → she’s
  • it is → it’s
  • we are → we’re
  • you are → you’re
  • they are → they’re

Quando usar

Use o Present Continuous para:

  • ações que acontecem agora: She is talking on the phone.
  • ações que acontecem em torno do momento presente: I am reading a new book this week.
  • situações temporárias: He is staying with friends.
  • situações em mudança: The weather is getting colder.
  • planos futuros combinados: We are meeting them tomorrow.
  • ações repetidas que são irritantes, frequentemente com always: He is always losing his keys.

Frases afirmativas

Use:

sujeito + am/is/are + verbo-ing

Frases negativas

Use:

sujeito + am/is/are + not + verbo-ing

Exemplos:

  • I’m not sleeping.
  • He isn’t listening.
  • We aren’t waiting.

Perguntas

Use:

Am/Is/Are + sujeito + verbo-ing?

  • Am I speaking too quickly?
  • Is she working today?
  • Are they coming with us?

Respostas curtas

  • Are you studying? — Yes, I am.
  • Is he sleeping? — No, he isn’t.
  • Are they waiting? — Yes, they are.

Ortografia das formas em -ing

Regra Verbo base Forma em -ing
A maioria dos verbos: adicione -ing work working
Verbos terminados em -e mudo: remova o -e make making
Vogal curta + consoante: dobre a consoante final run running
Verbos terminados em -ie: mude -ie para -y lie lying

Exemplos

  1. I am writing an email.
  2. She is cooking dinner.
  3. They are playing in the garden.
  4. We aren’t watching television.
  5. He isn’t working today.
  6. Are you waiting for the bus?
  7. Is your brother sleeping?
  8. The weather is getting warmer.
  9. I am staying with my parents this week.
  10. We are meeting Sarah tomorrow evening.

Exceções

Alguns verbos não são normalmente usados nas formas contínuas porque descrevem estados, pensamentos, sentimentos, posse ou sentidos.

Exemplos comuns incluem:

  • know
  • believe
  • understand
  • want
  • need
  • like
  • love
  • hate
  • own
  • belong

Use o Present Simple com esses significados.

  • Correto: I know the answer.
  • Incorreto: I am knowing the answer.
  • Correto: She wants some water.
  • Incorreto: She is wanting some water.

Alguns verbos podem ser usados nas duas formas quando seu significado muda.

  • I think he is right. — Esta é a minha opinião.
  • I am thinking about the problem. — Esta é uma atividade mental que acontece agora.

Erros comuns

  1. Incorreto: She working now. Correto: She is working now. Explicação: Use am, is ou are antes do verbo com -ing.

  2. Incorreto: I am work today. Correto: I am working today. Explicação: Use a forma com -ing depois de am.

  3. Incorreto: They is playing outside. Correto: They are playing outside. Explicação: Use are com they.

  4. Incorreto: He is play football. Correto: He is playing football. Explicação: Adicione -ing ao verbo principal.

  5. Incorreto: Are she studying? Correto: Is she studying? Explicação: Use is com she.

  6. Incorreto: I don’t working now. Correto: I’m not working now. Explicação: Use am not, não don’t, em negativas do Present Continuous.

  7. Incorreto: Does he sleeping? Correto: Is he sleeping? Explicação: Não use does em perguntas no Present Continuous.

  8. Incorreto: She is makeing dinner. Correto: She is making dinner. Explicação: Remova o -e mudo antes de adicionar -ing.
