To Be: Perguntas e Negativas

O que é?

O verbo to be é usado para descrever pessoas, coisas, lugares, sentimentos, idades, profissões e situações.

As formas do presente são:

  • am
  • is
  • are

Use am com I.

  • I am tired.

Use is com he, she e it.

  • He is at home.
  • She is a teacher.
  • It is cold.

Use are com you, we e they.

  • You are ready.
  • We are friends.
  • They are busy.

Quando usar

Use to be para falar sobre:

  • identidade: I am Daniel.
  • profissões: She is a nurse.
  • idade: He is twenty years old.
  • sentimentos: We are happy.
  • descrições: The room is small.
  • localizações: They are at work.
  • nacionalidade: She is Canadian.
  • clima e tempo: It is cold. It is six o’clock.

Use as formas negativas para dizer que algo não é verdade.

  • I am not tired.
  • He is not at home.
  • They are not ready.

Use perguntas para perguntar sobre identidade, condição, localização, idade ou descrição.

  • Are you tired?
  • Is she at work?
  • Are they students?

Estrutura

Frases afirmativas

Use:

sujeito + am/is/are + complemento

As contrações comuns são:

Frases negativas

Use:

sujeito + am/is/are + not + complemento

Exemplos:

  • I’m not hungry.
  • She isn’t at home.
  • We aren’t late.

As formas he’s not, she’s not, you’re not e they’re not também estão corretas.

Perguntas

Coloque am, is ou are antes do sujeito.

am/is/are + sujeito + complemento?

Afirmação Pergunta

They are ready. Are they ready?
I am late. Am I late?

Respostas curtas

Use am, is ou are em respostas curtas.

  • Are you ready? — Yes, I am.
  • Is he at home? — No, he isn’t.
  • Are they busy? — Yes, they are.
  • Is she a doctor? — No, she isn’t.

Normalmente, não use contrações afirmativas em respostas curtas.

  • Correto: Yes, I am.
  • Incorreto: Yes, I’m.

  5. He isn’t at work.
  6. We aren’t ready yet.
  7. Are you from Canada?

Exceções

Use am I not? em perguntas formais.

  • Am I not invited?

No inglês do dia a dia, aren’t I? é comum em perguntas negativas e question tags.

  • Aren’t I invited?
  • I’m late, aren’t I?

Não use do, does ou did com to be.

  • Correto: Is she tired?
  • Incorreto: Does she be tired?

O verbo to be não usa um verbo principal separado em descrições simples.

  • She is happy.
  • They are at home.

Erros comuns

  1. Incorreto: I is tired. Correto: I am tired. Explicação: Use am com I.

  2. Incorreto: They is at home. Correto: They are at home. Explicação: Use are com they.

  3. Incorreto: She not is ready. Correto: She is not ready. Explicação: Coloque not depois de is.

  4. Incorreto: I don’t am hungry. Correto: I am not hungry. Explicação: Não use do com to be.

  5. Incorreto: Does he be at work? Correto: Is he at work? Explicação: Coloque is antes do sujeito para formar uma pergunta.

  6. Incorreto: Are she tired? Correto: Is she tired? Explicação: Use is com she.

  7. Incorreto: Is they ready? Correto: Are they ready? Explicação: Use are com they.

  8. Incorreto: Yes, I’m. Correto: Yes, I am. Explicação: Normalmente, não use uma contração afirmativa em uma resposta curta.
