Adjetivos Possessivos

O que é?

Os adjetivos possessivos mostram quem possui algo ou a quem algo está conectado.

Eles vêm antes de um substantivo.

Os adjetivos possessivos em inglês são:

Exemplos:

  • This is my coat.
  • Her brother lives in London.
  • Their car is outside.

Quando usar

Use adjetivos possessivos para falar sobre:

  • posse: This is my laptop.
  • relações familiares: Her mother is a teacher.
  • partes do corpo: He hurt his arm.
  • pertences pessoais: Where are your keys?
  • lugares conectados a alguém: Our office is nearby.
  • animais ou coisas: The dog is eating its food.

Use um adjetivo possessivo antes do substantivo que ele descreve.

Estrutura

A estrutura básica é:

adjetivo possessivo + substantivo

Os adjetivos possessivos não mudam para substantivos no singular ou no plural.

Escolha o adjetivo possessivo de acordo com o possuidor, não com a coisa possuída.

  • Anna has a car. Her car is red.
  • Mark has a car. His car is red.
  • Anna and Mark have a car. Their car is red.

Não use um artigo antes de um adjetivo possessivo.

  • Correto: my friend
  • Incorreto: the my friend

Exceções

Its é um adjetivo possessivo.

  • The company changed its name.

It’s é a forma abreviada de it is ou it has.

  • It’s cold today.
  • It’s been a long day.

Não use apóstrofo no adjetivo possessivo its.

Os adjetivos possessivos são diferentes dos pronomes possessivos.

  • This is my book.
  • This book is mine.

Um adjetivo possessivo deve ser seguido por um substantivo. Um pronome possessivo substitui o substantivo.

Erros comuns

  1. Incorreto: She is my sister. His name is Anna. Correto: She is my sister. Her name is Anna. Explicação: Use her para um possuidor feminino.

  2. Incorreto: He has a car. Her car is new. Correto: He has a car. His car is new. Explicação: Use his para um possuidor masculino.

  3. Incorreto: This is mine book. Correto: This is my book. Explicação: Use o adjetivo possessivo my antes de um substantivo.

  4. Incorreto: The dog is eating it’s food. Correto: The dog is eating its food. Explicação: Its indica posse. It’s significa it is ou it has.

  5. Incorreto: This is the my phone. Correto: This is my phone. Explicação: Não use um artigo antes de um adjetivo possessivo.

  6. Incorreto: We live here. Their house is small. Correto: We live here. Our house is small. Explicação: Use our quando os possuidores são we.

  7. Incorreto: They are washing their car, and she is cleaning their window. Correto: They are washing their car, and she is cleaning her window. Explicação: Escolha o adjetivo possessivo de acordo com o possuidor.

  8. Incorreto: My books is on the table. Correto: My books are on the table. Explicação: O adjetivo possessivo não muda, mas o verbo deve concordar com o substantivo no plural.
