Avverbi di frequenza

Che cos’è?

Gli avverbi di frequenza mostrano quanto spesso accade un’azione.

Gli avverbi di frequenza comuni includono:

  • always — ogni volta
  • usually — per la maggior parte del tempo
  • often — molte volte
  • sometimes — in alcune occasioni
  • rarely — non spesso
  • hardly ever — quasi mai
  • never — in nessun momento

Queste parole descrivono la frequenza senza dare un numero esatto.

Quando si usano

Usa gli avverbi di frequenza per parlare di abitudini, routine e azioni ripetute.

  • I usually drink coffee in the morning.
  • She often walks to work.
  • They never eat meat.

Si usano comunemente con il Present Simple perché questo tempo descrive azioni abituali e abitudini.

Alcune espressioni danno una frequenza più precisa:

  • every day
  • once a week
  • twice a month
  • three times a year

Di solito queste espressioni si trovano all’inizio o alla fine di una frase.

  • I exercise three times a week.
  • Every Friday, we order pizza.

Con la maggior parte dei verbi

Metti l’avverbio di frequenza prima del verbo principale.

Con il verbo “be”

Metti l’avverbio di frequenza dopo il verbo be.

Con i verbi ausiliari e modali

Metti l’avverbio dopo il primo verbo ausiliare o modale.

soggetto + ausiliare o modale + avverbio + verbo principale

  • She can always help you.
  • I have never seen that film.
  • They do not usually work on weekends.
  • He will often call in the evening.

Sometimes, usually, and often

Sometimes, usually, e often possono anche comparire all’inizio di una frase.

  • Sometimes, I walk to work.
  • Usually, we eat dinner at home.
  • Often, she reads before bed.

Sometimes può anche comparire alla fine.

  • I cook dinner sometimes.

Never

Never ha già un significato negativo. Non usarlo con not.

  • I never smoke.
  • She is never rude.

Esempi

  1. I always check my email in the morning.
  2. She usually takes the bus to work.
  3. We often cook dinner together.
  4. He sometimes forgets his keys.
  5. They rarely go to restaurants.
  6. My parents hardly ever travel in winter.

Eccezioni

Alcune espressioni di frequenza non seguono la solita posizione dell’avverbio.

Espressioni come every day, once a week, e three times a month di solito si trovano all’inizio o alla fine della frase.

  • I call my parents once a week.
  • Every morning, she goes for a walk.

L’avverbio sometimes può trovarsi prima del verbo principale, all’inizio o alla fine di una frase.

  • I sometimes work from home.
  • Sometimes, I work from home.
  • I work from home sometimes.

Errori comuni

  1. Incorrect: I go always to work by bus. Correct: I always go to work by bus. Explanation: Metti l’avverbio prima del verbo principale.

  2. Incorrect: She always is tired. Correct: She is always tired. Explanation: Metti l’avverbio dopo il verbo be.

  3. Incorrect: He does never eat breakfast. Correct: He never eats breakfast. Explanation: Never ha già un significato negativo, quindi non usare does come ausiliare negativo.

  4. Incorrect: They don't never arrive late. Correct: They never arrive late. Explanation: Non usare not e never insieme.

  5. Incorrect: I am drink usually coffee. Correct: I usually drink coffee. Explanation: Non usare am prima di un verbo principale nel Present Simple.

  6. Incorrect: She can drive always safely. Correct: She can always drive safely. Explanation: Metti l’avverbio dopo il verbo modale can.

  7. Incorrect: We go to the gym often every day. Correct: We go to the gym every day. Explanation: Evita di usare due espressioni di frequenza quando ne basta una.
