Cos'è?
Le domande sono usate per chiedere informazioni, conferme, permessi o aiuto.
Le domande in inglese spesso usano un verbo ausiliare prima del soggetto.
Le parole interrogative comuni includono:
- who
- what
- where
- when
- why
- which
- how
Esempi:
- Do you work here?
- Is she at home?
- Where do they live?
- Why are you tired?
Quando si usano
Usa le domande sì/no quando la risposta può essere sì o no.
- Do you like coffee?
- Is he ready?
- Can they come?
Usa le domande con parola interrogativa quando hai bisogno di informazioni specifiche.
- What do you want?
- Where does she work?
- When are they leaving?
- Why did he call?
- How can I help?
Usa le domande per chiedere informazioni su:
- persone: Who is that?
- cose: What is this?
- luoghi: Where do you live?
- tempo: When does the meeting start?
- motivi: Why are you late?
- scelte: Which colour do you prefer?
- modi o condizioni: How do you make this?

Domande sul soggetto
Quando who o what è il soggetto, non usare do, does o did.
- Who called you?
- What happened?
- Who lives here?
Confronta:
- Who called Anna? — chiede informazioni sulla persona che ha chiamato
- Who did Anna call? — chiede informazioni sulla persona che Anna ha chiamato

Eccezioni
Non usare do, does o did con to be.
- Corretto: Is she ready?
- Scorretto: Does she be ready?
Non usare do, does o did con i verbi modali.
- Corretto: Can he drive?
- Scorretto: Does he can drive?
Quando una parola interrogativa è il soggetto, si usa l'ordine normale soggetto-verbo.
- Who knows the answer?
- What caused the problem?
Alcune domande possono avere una forma simile a un'affermazione nel parlato informale quando chi parla è sorpreso o sta verificando informazioni.
- You finished already?
- She lives here?
Queste forme sono comuni nella conversazione ma meno adatte nella scrittura formale.
