Can, Can’t, Could e Couldn’t

Cos'è?

Can, can't, could e couldn't sono verbi modali.

Si usano per parlare di:

  • abilità presente
  • abilità passata
  • permesso
  • richieste
  • possibilità

Can è la forma positiva.

  • I can swim.

Can't è la forma abbreviata di cannot.

  • I can't drive.

Could è spesso usato per abilità passata o richieste educate.

  • She could read when she was four.
  • Could you help me?

Couldn't è la forma abbreviata di could not.

  • We couldn't find the address.

Quando si usa

Usa can per l'abilità presente.

  • He can speak English.
  • I can cook.

Usa can't quando qualcuno non è in grado di fare qualcosa.

  • She can't swim.
  • We can't come today.

Usa can per chiedere o dare il permesso.

Usa could per l'abilità generale nel passato.

Usa couldn't per mancanza di abilità o una situazione non riuscita nel passato.

Could è di solito più educato di can nelle richieste.

Struttura

Usa la forma base del verbo dopo can, can't, could e couldn't.

Eccezioni

Usa could per l'abilità generale nel passato.

Per un'azione specifica riuscita nel passato, was able to è spesso più naturale.

Tuttavia, couldn't è naturale per un'azione specifica non riuscita.

  • We couldn't fix the problem yesterday.

Cannot si scrive come una parola sola.
