Than e l'articolo determinativo

Che cos'è?

Nei confronti in inglese si usano spesso than e the.

  • Tom is taller than Ben.
  • This car is faster than mine.

  • Anna is the tallest student in the class.
  • This is the cheapest option.

La parola the si usa anche nella struttura the + comparativo, the + comparativo per mostrare che due cambiamenti sono collegati.

  • The more you practise, the easier it becomes.
  • The earlier we leave, the better.

  • My house is bigger than yours.
  • Today is warmer than yesterday.

  • She is the youngest person in the family.
  • It is the most expensive restaurant here.

Usa the + comparativo, the + comparativo quando un cambiamento influisce su un altro cambiamento.

  • The faster you drive, the more fuel you use.
  • The longer I wait, the more tired I become.

  • The sooner, the better.
  • The more, the merrier.

Struttura

Per un confronto diretto:

Soggetto + be/verbo + comparativo + than + persona/cosa

  • Jack is older than Sam.
  • This train moves faster than that one.

Con more o less:

Soggetto + be/verbo + more/less + aggettivo + than + persona/cosa

  • This hotel is more comfortable than the other one.
  • The second task is less difficult than the first.

Per un superlativo:

Soggetto + be + the + superlativo + nome/complemento

  • Maya is the tallest student in the class.
  • This is the most useful tool.
Forma Esempio
comparativo + than taller than
more + aggettivo + than more expensive than
less + aggettivo + than less difficult than
the + superlativo the tallest
the most + aggettivo the most expensive

Per mostrare due cambiamenti collegati:

The + comparativo + frase, the + comparativo + frase

  • The older I get, the more patient I become.
  • The less you spend, the more you save.

  • She is taller than me.
  • She is taller than I am.

  • Corretto: John is taller than Mike.
  • Errato: John is the taller than Mike.

  • John is the taller of the two brothers.

La struttura the + comparativo, the + comparativo è un modello di confronto speciale e fisso.
