Nomi non numerabili comuni

Cos'è?

I sostantivi non numerabili descrivono cose che di solito non contiamo come singoli elementi separati.

Spesso si riferiscono a sostanze, materiali, informazioni, attività o idee generali.

I sostantivi non numerabili comuni includono:

  • water
  • milk
  • rice
  • bread
  • money
  • information
  • advice
  • furniture
  • luggage
  • homework
  • work
  • traffic
  • weather
  • news

I sostantivi non numerabili normalmente non hanno una forma plurale. Di solito sono usati con un verbo singolare.

Quando usarli

Usa i sostantivi non numerabili quando parli di:

  • sostanze e materiali: water, coffee, sugar, wood
  • cibo come sostanza generale: bread, rice, cheese, meat
  • idee astratte: happiness, knowledge, information
  • attività e lavoro: homework, work, research
  • gruppi di cose viste come una categoria: furniture, luggage, equipment
  • condizioni generali: weather, traffic

Usa some, much, a little o a lot of con i sostantivi non numerabili.

Usa un contenitore, una quantità o un'unità quando devi contarli.

Normalmente non usare a o an direttamente prima di un sostantivo non numerabile.

Per contare un sostantivo non numerabile, usa un'unità o un'espressione adatta:

  • two pieces of information
  • a loaf of bread
  • three bottles of water
  • a cup of coffee

Eccezioni

Alcuni sostantivi possono essere numerabili o non numerabili, a seconda del loro significato.

  • coffee è non numerabile quando significa la bevanda in generale: I drink coffee every morning.
  • a coffee significa una tazza o una porzione: We ordered two coffees.
  • chicken è non numerabile quando significa il cibo: We ate chicken.
  • a chicken significa un animale: They have five chickens.
  • paper è non numerabile quando significa il materiale: I need some paper.
  • a paper può significare un documento, un articolo o un giornale: She wrote a paper.

Errori comuni

  1. Scorretto: I need an advice. Corretto: I need some advice. Spiegazione: Advice è non numerabile, quindi non usare an.

  2. Scorretto: She gave me two advices. Corretto: She gave me two pieces of advice. Spiegazione: Advice normalmente non ha una forma plurale.

  3. Scorretto: These informations are useful. Corretto: This information is useful. Spiegazione: Information è non numerabile e richiede un verbo singolare.

  4. Scorretto: We bought three breads. Corretto: We bought three loaves of bread. Spiegazione: Usa un'espressione di quantità per contare il pane.

  5. Scorretto: How many money do you have? Corretto: How much money do you have? Spiegazione: Usa how much con i sostantivi non numerabili.

  6. Scorretto: The furnitures are new. Corretto: The furniture is new. Spiegazione: Furniture è non numerabile e normalmente non ha una forma plurale.

  7. Scorretto: I have many homework today. Corretto: I have a lot of homework today. Spiegazione: Usa much o a lot of con i sostantivi non numerabili, non many.
