French Question Words

What is it?

French question words are used to ask for specific information.

Common French question words include:

quoi what
où where
quand when
pourquoi why
comment how
combien how much / how many
quel / quelle / quels / quelles what / which

These words can be used with common question structures such as est-ce que, inversion, or informal spoken word order.

When to use

Use qui to ask about a person.

  • Qui est là ?
  • Qui est-ce que tu connais ?

Use que or qu’ to ask about a thing or action.

  • Que fais-tu ?
  • Qu’est-ce que tu veux ?

Use quoi mainly after a preposition or at the end of an informal question.

  • Avec quoi ?
  • Tu fais quoi ?

Use où to ask about a place.

  • Où habites-tu ?
  • Où est-ce qu’elle travaille ?

Use quand to ask about time.

  • Quand arrive-t-il ?
  • Quand est-ce que vous partez ?

Use pourquoi to ask for a reason.

  • Pourquoi tu pars ?
  • Pourquoi est-ce qu’elle est triste ?

Use comment to ask how something happens or to ask for information such as a name.

  • Comment allez-vous ?
  • Comment tu t’appelles ?

Use combien to ask about quantity or number.

  • Combien ça coûte ?
  • Combien de livres as-tu ?

Use quel, quelle, quels and quelles before a noun to ask which or what.

  • Quel livre préfères-tu ?
  • Quelle heure est-il ?
  • Quels films aimez-vous ?
  • Quelles langues parles-tu ?

Structure

A question word can appear at the beginning of a question.

Question word + est-ce que + subject + verb

  • Où est-ce que tu habites ?
  • Quand est-ce qu’il arrive ?
  • Pourquoi est-ce qu’elle part ?

It can also be used with inversion.

Question word + verb + subject pronoun

  • Où habites-tu ?
  • Quand arrive-t-il ?
  • Comment allez-vous ?

In informal spoken French, some question words can stay at the end.

Subject + verb + question word

  • Tu habites où ?
  • Il arrive quand ?
  • Tu fais quoi ?

Qui

When qui is the subject of the verb, do not add another subject pronoun.

  • Qui travaille ici ?
  • Qui vient demain ?

When asking about the object, qui can be used with est-ce que.

  • Qui est-ce que tu invites ?

Que and quoi

Use que or qu’ before the verb in formal structures.

  • Que voulez-vous ?
  • Qu’est-ce qu’il cherche ?

Use quoi after a preposition or commonly at the end of an informal question.

  • De quoi parlez-vous ?
  • Tu veux quoi ?

Combien

Use combien de + noun to ask about quantity.

  • Combien de frères as-tu ?
  • Combien de voitures avez-vous ?

Quel

Quel agrees with the gender and number of the noun.

Exceptions

Qui can mean either who as the subject or whom as the object, depending on the structure.

  • Qui arrive ? — Who is arriving?
  • Qui est-ce que tu invites ? — Who are you inviting?

Que becomes qu’ before a vowel sound.

  • Qu’est-ce que tu fais ?
  • Qu’aime-t-elle ?

Pourquoi is usually answered with parce que.

  • Pourquoi tu pars ?
  • Parce que je suis fatigué.

The form quel changes according to the gender and number of the noun, even though all four forms have the same basic meaning.

Common mistakes

  1. Incorrect: Où est-ce que habites-tu ? Correct: Où est-ce que tu habites ? Explanation: After est-ce que, keep normal subject-verb order.

  2. Incorrect: Qui est-ce que vient demain ? Correct: Qui vient demain ? Explanation: When qui is the subject, do not add est-ce que in this structure.

  3. Incorrect: Que tu fais ? Correct: Qu’est-ce que tu fais ? Explanation: Use a complete question structure with que.

  4. Incorrect: Avec que tu écris ? Correct: Avec quoi tu écris ? Explanation: Use quoi after a preposition.

  5. Incorrect: Combien livres as-tu ? Correct: Combien de livres as-tu ? Explanation: Use de between combien and a noun.

  6. Incorrect: Quel voiture préfères-tu ? Correct: Quelle voiture préfères-tu ? Explanation: Quelle agrees with the feminine noun voiture.

  7. Incorrect: Pourquoi tu pars ? Parce je suis fatigué. Correct: Pourquoi tu pars ? Parce que je suis fatigué. Explanation: Use parce que to give a reason.
