What is it?
French has two main subject pronouns for the English word you:
- tu is used for one person in informal situations.
- vous is used for one person in formal situations or for two or more people.
The choice between tu and vous depends on the relationship between the speakers and the number of people being addressed.

When to use

Exceptions
The social rules for choosing tu or vous can vary between families, workplaces, regions and cultures.
In some workplaces, colleagues use tu immediately. In others, they use vous until someone suggests changing to tu.
The verb tutoyer means to address someone with tu. The verb vouvoyer means to address someone with vous.
A person may say:
- On peut se tutoyer ?
- Vous pouvez me tutoyer.
When speaking to several people, always use vous, even if each person would normally be addressed with tu individually.
