Gender of French Nouns

What is it?

Every French noun has a grammatical gender: masculine or feminine.

A noun's gender affects the articles, adjectives and some pronouns used with it.

Gender Definite article Indefinite article Example
Masculine le un le livre, un livre
Feminine la une la table, une table

Before a vowel sound or a silent h, both le and la become l'.

  • l'homme
  • l'école

The plural article is les for both masculine and feminine nouns.

  • les livres
  • les tables

Gender does not always match the natural sex of a person or the meaning of an object. It is best to learn each noun together with its article.

When to use

Use the gender of a noun when choosing:

  • an article: un, une, le, la
  • a demonstrative adjective: ce, cet, cette
  • a possessive adjective in some forms: mon, ma
  • an adjective that describes the noun
  • a pronoun that replaces the noun

Examples:

  • un petit appartement
  • une petite maison
  • ce livre
  • cette voiture
  • le sac est nouveau
  • la veste est nouvelle

Some common noun endings can help identify gender, but they are not completely reliable.

Commonly masculine endings Examples
-age le village
-ment le document
-eau le bureau
-isme le tourisme
-phone le téléphone
Commonly feminine endings Examples
-tion la question
-sion la décision
-té la liberté
-ette la fourchette
-ance la différence

Structure

The basic structure is:

Article + noun

  • un livre
  • une chaise
  • le téléphone
  • la porte

With an adjective, the structure is often:

Article + noun + adjective

  • un livre intéressant
  • une histoire intéressante
  • un appartement moderne
  • une maison moderne

Some adjectives come before the noun:

Article + adjective + noun

  • un petit jardin
  • une petite chambre
  • un nouveau travail
  • une nouvelle voiture

The adjective usually agrees with the gender of the noun.

Masculine Feminine
un ami français une amie française
un sac blanc une chemise blanche
un homme heureux une femme heureuse
un nouveau livre une nouvelle idée

To replace a singular noun with a subject pronoun:

  • Use il for a masculine noun.

  • Use elle for a feminine noun.

  • Le livre est intéressant. Il est nouveau.

  • La voiture est rapide. Elle est moderne.

Examples

  1. J'achète un nouveau téléphone.
  2. Elle habite dans une petite maison.

Noun endings are only general patterns. Many nouns do not follow them.

  • la plage is feminine despite ending in -age.
  • le problème is masculine despite ending in -e.
  • la main is feminine despite not having a commonly feminine ending.

Some nouns have different masculine and feminine forms for people or animals.

  • un étudiant — une étudiante
  • un acteur — une actrice
  • un serveur — une serveuse

Some nouns have the same form for masculine and feminine people. The article shows the gender.

Some nouns change meaning when their gender changes.

  • le livre — the book
