Singular and Plural French Nouns

What is it?

French nouns can be singular or plural.

  • A singular noun refers to one person, animal, place, object or idea.
  • A plural noun refers to more than one.

In most cases, French forms the plural by adding -s to the singular noun.

Singular Plural
un livre des livres
une maison des maisons
le chat les chats
la voiture les voitures

The final -s is usually not pronounced.

  • un livre and des livres usually sound the same
  • une table and des tables usually sound the same

Articles and adjectives must also agree with the singular or plural noun.

When to use

Use a singular noun when talking about one person or thing.

  • un ami
  • la porte
  • cette voiture

Use a plural noun when talking about two or more people or things.

  • des amis
  • les portes
  • ces voitures

The article changes with the number of the noun.

Adjectives usually also become plural.

  • un petit appartement
  • des petits appartements
  • une grande maison
  • des grandes maisons

Structure

The basic singular structure is:

Singular article + singular noun

  • un livre
  • une chaise
  • le restaurant
  • la banque

The basic plural structure is:

Plural article + plural noun

  • des livres
  • des chaises
  • les restaurants
  • les banques

For most nouns, add -s to form the plural.

Nouns ending in -s, -x or -z usually do not change in writing.

Singular Plural
un fils des fils
un prix des prix
un nez des nez

Many nouns ending in -au, -eau or -eu add -x.

Singular Plural
un bateau des bateaux
un cadeau des cadeaux
un jeu des jeux

Many nouns ending in -al change to -aux.

Singular Plural
un animal des animaux
un journal des journaux
un cheval des chevaux

The adjective must agree with the plural noun.

  • un livre intéressant
  • des livres intéressants
  • une voiture rapide
  • des voitures rapides

Examples

  1. J'achète un livre.
  2. J'achète des livres.
  3. La fille joue dans le jardin.
  4. Les filles jouent dans le jardin.
  5. Nous avons deux voitures.
  6. Il prépare des cadeaux.
  7. Les animaux sont dans le parc.
  8. Ces maisons sont très anciennes.
  9. Elle lit plusieurs journaux.
  10. Les prix sont élevés.

Exceptions

Some nouns ending in -ou add -x instead of -s.

  • un bijou — des bijoux
  • un genou — des genoux
  • un caillou — des cailloux

Many other nouns ending in -ou simply add -s.

  • un trou — des trous
  • un clou — des clous

Some nouns ending in -al add -s instead of changing to -aux.

  • un festival — des festivals
  • un carnaval — des carnavals

Some nouns have irregular plural forms.

  • un œil — des yeux
  • monsieur — messieurs
  • madame — mesdames

Some nouns are commonly used only in the plural.

  • les vacances
  • les lunettes
  • les ciseaux

Common mistakes

  1. Incorrect: des livre Correct: des livres Explanation: Most plural nouns add -s.

  2. Incorrect: les voiture Correct: les voitures Explanation: The plural article les must be followed by a plural noun.

  3. Incorrect: des chevals Correct: des chevaux Explanation: Many nouns ending in -al change to -aux in the plural.

  4. Incorrect: un cadeaux Correct: un cadeau Explanation: A singular article must be followed by a singular noun.

  5. Incorrect: des bateaus Correct: des bateaux Explanation: Many nouns ending in -eau form the plural with -x.

  6. Incorrect: les grandes maison Correct: les grandes maisons Explanation: Both the adjective and the noun must agree in the plural.

  7. Incorrect: des nezs Correct: des nez Explanation: Nouns ending in -z usually do not change in the plural.
