French Reflexive Verbs in the Present

What is it?

Reflexive verbs describe actions that the subject does to itself or actions that are closely connected to the subject.

In French, reflexive verbs use a reflexive pronoun before the verb.

A reflexive verb is usually shown in the infinitive with se.

Examples:

  • se laver — to wash oneself
  • se lever — to get up
  • s’appeler — to be called
  • se coucher — to go to bed
  • se préparer — to get ready

The reflexive pronoun changes with the subject.

Subject Reflexive pronoun Example
je me / m’ je me lave
tu te / t’ tu te lèves
il / elle / on se / s’ elle se prépare
nous nous nous nous levons
vous vous vous vous couchez
ils / elles se / s’ ils se lavent

When to use

Use reflexive verbs when the subject performs an action on itself.

  • Je me lave.
  • Elle se regarde dans le miroir.

Use them for many common daily routines.

  • se réveiller — to wake up
  • se lever — to get up
  • se laver — to wash
  • s’habiller — to get dressed
  • se coucher — to go to bed

Some common French verbs are reflexive even when English does not use a reflexive form.

  • Je m’appelle Paul. — My name is Paul.
  • Nous nous reposons. — We rest.
  • Elle se souvient de son adresse. — She remembers her address.

Structure

The basic structure is:

Subject + reflexive pronoun + conjugated verb

  • Je me lave.
  • Tu te prépares.
  • Il se couche.
  • Nous nous reposons.

The reflexive pronoun must match the subject.

Subject Structure
je je me + verb
tu tu te + verb
il / elle / on il / elle / on se + verb
nous nous nous + verb
vous vous vous + verb
ils / elles ils / elles se + verb

Before a vowel sound, me, te and se become m’, t’ and s’.

  • Je m’habille.
  • Tu t’appelles Marie.
  • Elle s’arrête ici.

To make a negative sentence, place ne before the reflexive pronoun and pas after the conjugated verb.

Subject + ne/n’ + reflexive pronoun + verb + pas

  • Je ne me lève pas tôt.
  • Elle ne se couche pas tard.
  • Nous ne nous préparons pas ici.

For regular -er reflexive verbs, conjugate the verb normally after the reflexive pronoun.

Example with se laver:

Subject Form
je je me lave
tu tu te laves
il / elle / on il se lave
nous nous nous lavons
vous vous vous lavez
ils / elles ils se lavent

Examples

  1. Je me lève à sept heures.
  2. Tu te laves le matin.
  3. Il se prépare pour le travail.
  4. Elle s’habille rapidement.
  5. On se couche tard.
  6. Nous nous reposons après le dîner.
  7. Vous vous appelez comment ?
  8. Ils se réveillent tôt.
  9. Elles se regardent dans le miroir.
  10. Je ne me couche pas tard.

Exceptions

Some reflexive verbs have spelling or stem changes in the present tense.

  • se lever → je me lève, nous nous levons
  • se réveiller → je me réveille, nous nous réveillons
  • s’appeler → je m’appelle, nous nous appelons

These changes come from the verb itself, not from the reflexive pronoun.

Some verbs can be used both reflexively and non-reflexively, with a different meaning.

  • Je lave la voiture. — I wash the car.

  • Je me lave. — I wash myself.

  • Elle réveille son fils. — She wakes her son.

  • Elle se réveille. — She wakes up.

  4. Incorrect: Nous se préparons. Correct: Nous nous préparons. Explanation: Use nous as the reflexive pronoun with nous.

  5. Incorrect: Je me ne couche pas tard. Correct: Je ne me couche pas tard. Explanation: Ne comes before the reflexive pronoun.
