The verb avoir changes according to the subject.

The main verb becomes a past participle.

Use the passé composé for actions that started and finished in the past.

  • Elle a regardé un film.

Many common French verbs form the passé composé with avoir.

  • parler → j’ai parlé
  • finir → j’ai fini
  • vendre → j’ai vendu
  • faire → j’ai fait
  • prendre → j’ai pris

Regular past participles

Regular verbs usually form the past participle according to their infinitive ending.

Questions

Common question structures include:

  • Est-ce que tu as mangé ?
  • As-tu fini ?
  • Vous avez travaillé hier ?

Examples

  1. J’ai travaillé hier.
  2. Tu as regardé un film.
  3. Il a acheté du pain.
  4. Elle a fini son travail.
  5. On a pris le bus.
  6. Nous avons visité Paris.
  7. Vous avez fait un gâteau.

Exceptions

Some French verbs form the passé composé with être instead of avoir, especially several verbs of movement and reflexive verbs.

  • Elle est arrivée.
  • Nous sommes partis.
  • Je me suis levé.

With avoir, the past participle normally does not agree with the subject.

  • Il a mangé.
  • Elle a mangé.
  • Ils ont mangé.
  • Elles ont mangé.

However, the past participle can agree with a direct object when that object comes before the verb.

  • J’ai acheté les fleurs.
  • Les fleurs que j’ai achetées sont belles.

This agreement is important in standard French but is more advanced than the basic formation of the passé composé.
