French Subject Pronouns

What is it?

French subject pronouns show who or what performs the action of a verb.

The main French subject pronouns are:

French English
je I
tu you, informal singular
il he or it
elle she or it
on one, we, people
nous we
vous you, formal singular or plural
ils they, masculine or mixed group
elles they, feminine group

A subject pronoun usually comes before the verb.

When to use

Use a subject pronoun to identify the person or thing doing the action.

  • Use je to talk about yourself.
  • Use tu to speak informally to one person.
  • Use il for a male person or a masculine noun.
  • Use elle for a female person or a feminine noun.
  • Use on for people in general or as an informal way to say we.
  • Use nous to say we, especially in formal or written French.
  • Use vous to speak formally to one person or to speak to several people.
  • Use ils for several male people or a mixed group.
